Dad's campaign is a life saver

Brighouse Echo - 23rd May 2003

A Father has handed over vital equipment to ambulance crews following a fundraising campaign in memory of his son who died from an undetected heart condition.

Mr Barry O’Loughlin has been raising money for the charity Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) since his son, Dominic, died suddenly in 1994, aged 11.

Dominic was captain of the Under 11s team for Clifton Rangers Junior Football Club at the time of his death.  He was taking part in a cross-country run soon after joining Crossley Heath School, Halifax, when he collapsed and died.

A former pupil of Lightcliffe Preparatory School, Dominic had also represented Huddersfield at under 10 level.

His parents, Barry and Fiona O’Loughlin, of Elland, had no indication that their son was suffering from the condition.

Mr O’Loughlin handed over vital heart and blood pressure equipment to paramedics on the Yorkshire air Ambulance and the voluntary Twenty-Four-Seven Scheme, a group of doctors used by West Yorkshire Metropolitan Ambulance Service to respond to emergency incidents involving major trauma.

The high tech kit, worth more than £8,000, includes a defibrillator and two ambulatory blood pressure monitors.

“We wanted to do something so that Dominic’s memory would live on.  We hope that this equipment will prevent other families from suffering as we have.”

Yorkshire air Ambulance support manager, Mr Mick Lindley, said: “The blood pressure monitors are a great asset to the Air Ambulance Paramedics.  They allow us to carry out basic but important medical checks.”

Twenty-Four-Seven doctor and WYMAS Research Registrar, Ms Alison Walker, added: “The defibrillator is used to kickstart a heart in cardiac arrest.  It’s a vital piece of equipment for doctors working in a pre-hospital environment and can make the difference between life and death.”

Helped by his family and the local community Mr O’Loughlin has raised over £15,000 through a variety of events for the Dominic O’Loughlin Memorial Fund held with CRY.

His next big fundraising event is the annual six-a-side Dominic O’Loughlin Soccer Festival, planned for 23 August at Brighouse High School.  Places are still available for youth teams.
