House of Commons Recognition for CRY NI

University of Ulster website

7th July 2007

Staff from the University’s Jordanstown Campus travelled to the House of Commons to attend the annual Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) parliamentary reception

John Carruthers, UU Clinic Manager, Cathal Breen, lecturer in clinical physiology and Gary Longwell, Sports Institute, accompanied Pat Jennings OBE and CRY NI representative John Lundy to the prestigious event.

The reception marked the announcement of a CRY / Philips heart screening partnership - a major new sports screening initiative - and highlighted aspects of the CRY community testing programme, which has already saved many young lives.

The UU Clinic at Jordanstown provides a community-screening programme for 14-35 year olds in Northern Ireland.  The Clinic, which is held every four weeks, offers cardiac testing as a means of detecting silent heart rhythm abnormalities.

“The Clinic offers an excellent service towards diagnosing abnormalities in heart rhythm that many people are unaware they may suffer from.  It is an excellent opportunity for the students studying clinical physiology to have an active role in this clinic and offers much needed recognition for this profession,” said Cathal Breen.

“This event makes you appreciate the work that CRY are doing throughout the United Kingdom and it is great to see students from clinical physiology getting involved to provide the service in Northern Ireland,” said UU Clinic Manager, John Carruthers.

John Lundy from CRY NI added: “We want to continue to provide the screens and raise the awareness of cardiac risk in the young in Northern Ireland and save lives. We also bring together those affected by Sudden Cardiac Death, to provide support and help people who have been through the same pain of loss as myself.”
