CRY's ECG Testing in Schools

At this moment we can generally only test in private schools.  We are currently unable to go into state run schools because of ethical restrictions, although we have received ethical permission for screenings in state schools in Lewisham and Essex. If we are successful in achieving our aim of gaining the support of government, we are hopeful that we will be able to respond to more screening requests from the state sector.

A school doctor's experiences of cardiac screening

Screening

  • Will identify most cardiac abnormalities. Accurate statistics are not available but experts believe at least 8 young people are dying suddenly each week in the UK of cardiac abnormalities.
  • Will raise awareness of symptoms
  • Will highlight the families that are most at risk, particularly those that have suffered from a young sudden cardiac death who might not be aware that family members must be screened.
  • Will encourage young people to take better care of their heart/ health in a broader sense.
  • Will educate School Nurses and Sports Personnel and help them identify potential problems.
  • Will reassure and offer information to parents who are well aware that these deaths occur and often cannot gain access to medical information that is simple enough for them to understand.
