Students
smashed their fundraising
target after launching a campaign in memory of a tragic schoolpal.
Paul

Comprehensive. School.
The

United at St James’ Park two years ago.
Inspired
by the memory of Paul, sixth form pupils broke the £10,000 barrier through a
variety of sponsor ed events.
These
included variety
show, disco, ceilidh, fancy
dress and sponsored penalty shoot-out with former Newcastle ace Peter Beardsley.
Former
classmate Russell Warren, 16, said: “Thinking about him definitely kept us
going.
“A
lot of money was raised because people knew we were supporting a charity which
will help people like Paul and his family.”
And
this week, Paul’s mum,
Michelle, of Sunniside, will
call at the school to present
a
£10,250 cheque to the charity
CRY - Cardiac Risk in the
Young. Norma Rutherford, Paul’s gran, said: “It was a big shock
losing Paul so young.
“The
whole family has raised cash for CRY and are very proud that his old school
friends are doing the same

have been absolutely wonderful and its an incredible amount of money they have
raised in his name.”
Fraser
Turnbull, sixth form tutor who co-ordinated the event, said: “The students
were inspirational.
“The
cause captured their imagination and it was a pleasure to be associated with
them.”
