Runners boost heart appeal

Daily Echo - 23rd October 2002

A group of Southampton runners have put their best feet forward to raise money for a vital heart-scanning machine for the city’s children.

Over 40 women from the area took part in the Flora Light Ladies’ Challenge in Hyde Park, London and completed the 5 km course to collect cash for the Southampton Supporters of charity Cardiac Risk in the Young.

The money raised from the event, which has not yet been totalled, will go towards buying a new heart scanner to be used to monitor the hearts of youngsters in the city.

Mary Abraham, from Bitterne, began fundraising for the charity after her son, Philip, died at the age of 16 of sudden heart failure.

She said: “I’m trying to raise awareness and trying to raise funds to buy another heart scanning machine that could be put in a local hospital or doctors surgery.

“It’s raising awareness that some children have practically a time bomb in their body, so just a simple test could save lives.

“To have mobile heart screening machines for the local youngsters is what we aim for.
