Fit fireman runs with young athletes in mind

Wimbourn Community Magazine - 11th April 2002

Mark Orchard from Corfe Mullen is one of seven Dorset firemen who plan to run the London Marathon in heart costumes to raise money for the charity CRY - Cardiac Risk in the Young - which is aiming to introduce ECG (electrocardiogram) test for young people.

Experts estimate that between four to eight young people die suddenly each week in the UK of sudden death syndrome.

The majority of these deaths are due to inherited forms of heart muscle disorder and irregular heart beat.

High level athletes who have died suddenly include footballer Daniel Yorath, 15 and 13-year-old Laura Moss who died at a school swimming gala.

Mark explained his reasons for choosing CRY as his charity.  The aims of CRY are:

Raise awareness of Cardiac Risk in the Young

Fund the CRY Centre for Sports Cardiology at the British Olympic Medical Centre at Northwick Park Hospital

Support CRY’s national screening programme

Support medical research into  Sudden Death Syndrome

Donate medical equipment to doctor’s surgeries and hospital units

Counsel and support families affected by sudden cardiac death
