A group of mothers will be running through Bath on
Saturday to help raise money to prevent deaths from undetected heart
conditions.
the three-mile sponsored run has been organised by
Sarah Buckley, of Combe Down, in memory of her brother Richard Wiggin.
The 38-year-old computer programmer from Newport
in Wales, who loved cycling, had been fit and apparently healthy when he
collapsed and died during a bike ride in January.
Sarah, of Bradford Road, said: "It was absolutely
unexpected, the last thing I could have imagined happening."
She said she had received great support from the
charity Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY), which provides counselling for
bereaved families and arranges screening for people who may be at risk from
undiagnosed heart conditions.
Sarah said she was introduced to CRY as soon as
the post-mortem revealed her brother had died of sudden cardiac death (SCD).
"They made themselves available to us as a whole
family. The support was just amazing."
CRY says that every week in the UK at least 12
people under the age of 35 die from SCD. The charity campaigns to
raise awareness of the dangers and calls for better cardiac screening as
some forms of SCD have a genetic link.
The charity also helped Sarah organise health
checks for herself and her three children.
She said: "I'm so grateful to them and wanted to
do something to help the charity. When I found out Rich had died, my
heart asked 'can some good come out of this?" I wanted a constructive
edge to the grieving process."
Sarah will be joined by 11 friends, most of them
mothers at Combe Down Primary School, for the run. They will set off
from Widcombe Lock at 4pm, and finish at Royal Victoria Park.

The runnners are holding a coffee morning tomorrow
at South Stoke Village Hall from 10am to noon. Entrance is £2.50 and
proceeds go to CRY.
