Popular and gifted sportsman and scholar Alex
Buckler died suddenly last year, at the age of 17.
Now his friends at King’s School Bruton, and his family have
organised a concert in his memory to raise funds for the charity CRY – Cardiac
Risk in the Young.
Alex’s friends Rose Byfleet
and Edward Marsh are the guest singers at the concert, to be held at the
school’s Fitzjames Theatre next Saturday, 17th September.
CRY is the charity which
supports families who are affected by a sudden cardiac death in the young.
Its patrons include Sir Steve Redgrave and Ian Botham, The charity also raises
awareness of many causes of sudden death. The manager, Steve Cox, says that
eight people, aged between 14 and 35, die every week from heart conditions.
“Much more research is needed.
Some conditions that lead to these deaths are understood better than others.
Our role as an organisation is to try to get more screening to get a better
understanding of why these deaths occur.”
Alex played squash and hockey
for Somerset. The school and all who knew him were extremely shocked at his
sudden death.
King’s school has been
tremendously supportive to his family, who live and farm at Pen Selwood. Next
Saturday’s concert will also include the Quorum and Cider Singers, two
offshoots of the Stanchester Choir.
