Family and friends will run together to pay a
lasting tribute to the memory of a Bognor Regis teenager.
Forty family and friends of 19-year-old David
Green, who died last December from an undiagnosed hereditary heart
condition, will pull on their running shoes and take part in Sunday's 2011
Bognor Prom 10K Race.
Dubbed ' Team David', the runners have already
raised £2,000 in sponsorship for Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY).
David's mum Gabby Broadhurst said: "We are running
the Bognor 10K to raise money for Cardiac Risk in the Young, in memory of
our beloved son David Green.
"David was a healthy and fit 19-year-old, who
loved to play hockey and football. He had run the Bognor 10K on
several occasions himself.
"David's death has left our family devastated and
truly shocked, to lose a child is any parent's worst nightmare.
"If we can prevent another family from
experiencing such a tragedy then our son's death takes on some meaning."
CRY conducts research into the causes of heart
problems, and aims to reduce the frequency of young sudden cardiac deaths.
Gabby said: "As a family we were unaware of the
statistics of sudden arrhythmic death, and that apparently 12 fit and
healthy young people die each week. This figure can be greatly reduced
if young people are screened.
"It was only through heart screening due to
David's death, that sudden arrhythmic death syndrome was diagnosed in
another family member.
"As a family we will continue to raise awareness
and raise money for CRY. Young people are dying needlessly and it is
important this message is heard."
Sunday's fundraising effort is the latest in a
series of events David's family and fiends have been involved with.
Gabby said people have been amazing in their
endeavours to raise money for CRY.
"A friend, Matt Minter, did a bungee jump in
Switzerland at Verrzasca Dam. which at 722 feet in the highest jump in the
world and raised £1,000 over the weekend.
David's sister, nieces and nephew did a sponsored
walk and raised £300.
"I will be running in the Great North Run as part
of the CRY team and hope to raise even more," said Gabby.
In April the Middleton and Bangor Hockey Club
hosted a charity afternoon which raised £2,000.
David was a midfielder for the club and had played
the sport since he was 11.
the Bognor Prom 10K, which is in its 17th
successful year will start in West Park in Aldwick at 11.30am.
