CRY Heart of London Bridges Walk

15th July 2012

Join CRY for the 6th annual CRY Heart of London Bridges Walk. This event offers the opportunity to show support for CRY, remember young people, raise funds and help raise awareness of young sudden cardiac death. In 2011, around 800 people took part in the Walk, helping us to raise over £54,000

Have fun, keep fit, save lives!

When and where is it?

Sunday 15 July. Register from 9.15am at Victoria Embankment Gardens. The walk will start from here at 10.30am and end at Hays Galleria, near London Bridge. The route crosses 7 Thames bridges and includes great views of at least 12 of London's famous landmarks, representing the 12 young sudden cardiac deaths that occur each week in the UK. These landmarks include County Hall, the Houses of Parliament, the London Eye, Somerset House, St Paul's Cathedral, Royal Festival Hall, the Tate Modern, Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, Southwark Cathedral, the Tower of London, City Hall and HMS Belfast.

How long is the walk?

8km (just under 5 miles). As a guide, the route should take about 2 hours at an average walking pace. There is also the option of a shorter buggy/wheelchair-friendly route.

How much does it cost to enter?

In advance: Adult = £10

On the day: Adult = £15.

Children 16 and under = free, but must be accompanied by an adult. Your entry fee purely goes towards the cost of running the event safely.

Who can take part?

Anyone with a moderate level of fitness. All ages are welcome but those aged 16 and under must be accompanied by an adult.

Do I have to be in a team?

Not at all. Many people will be taking part on their own. Individual walkers will leave first as a group, so there will be an opportunity to meet others who are walking on their own. If you would like to take part as a team, why not get a group of friends, colleagues or family together.

Anything else I need to know?

Drinks will be available at the start, along the way and at the end. Bridges Walk T-shirts will be provided to walkers in advance.

How can I enter?

Go to Victoria Embankment Gardens next to Embankment station if you wish to take part and haven’t yet registered. You should report to the late check in desk between 9.15am and 9.45am.  The cost on the day is £15 per adult, accompanied children aged 16 and under, free of charge. You will be able to pick up your Bridges Walk t-shirt and balloons once you have registered on the day.

I cannot take part - how can I help?

If you would like to make a donation towards the event we would be extremely grateful. To donate online please click here. Alternatively, to make a donation by cheque, please make cheques payable to CRY and send to CRY, Unit 7 Epson Down Metro Centre, Waterfield, Tadworth Surrey KT20 5LR.

Any other questions?

Please call the fundraising team on 01737 363222 or email events@c-r-y.org.uk.

We are always looking for volunteers to help with this event, without whom we simply would not be able to run it. To find out more or to offer your time on the day please e-mail events@c-r-y.org.uk.

This event was previously supported by Westminster City Council, St Martins Property Group, Chubb Insurance Group, Foresters, Cards Made Easy, Sainsbury's and Eden Fitness

The funds raised from the event will go exclusively towards CRY's Research Fellowship Programme, which means we are unable to allocate sponsorship to ringfenced memorial funds.

What this walk achieves for CRY:

Sponsorship and donations raised from the Bridges Walk will go towards funding CRY's Research Fellowship Programme, which is essential to the services we offer. CRY currently funds 6 doctors, for 2 years, who specialise in the field of inherited cardiac conditions, sudden cardiac death, screening and sports cardiology. The research that they produce advances our understanding of conditions that can lead to young sudden cardiac death. £50,000 will fund a Research Fellow for 1 year, so if 1000 people raise £50 each in sponsorship we could fund a Research Fellow's valuable work for a full year.

For every £1 donated to fund a Research Fellow:

  • ·50p will go towards fast track screening services for families who have been affected by young sudden cardiac death

  • ·30p will go towards medical research into young sudden cardiac death

  • ·20p will go towards our national screening programme for young people (aged 14-35 years)

·     Over one year, a CRY funded Research Fellow will:

  • ·     Facilitate 250 fast-track referrals to the CRY Centre for Inherited Cardiovascular Conditions and Sports Cardiology at St George's Hospital, London. Families can be seen at these fast-track clinics within a few weeks of referral after the sudden death of a family member.

  • ·     Publish at least 2 peer reviewed articles in leading journals and present their research at international conferences.

  • ·     Support the screening of 2000 people. CRY Research Fellows carry out consultations with every person CRY tests, and manage any abnormal screening results.
