Footballers riding to Paris (raising charity cash)

Camberley Courier - 19th April 2006

By Rebecca Magill

Two Camberley Town footballers are riding their bikes from London to Paris in just four days in aid of a heart charity.

Matt Chesterman, 25, and Adam Roberts, 20, are taking part in the sponsored rid organised by Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY), a charity which helps raise awareness of, and funds research into, sudden cardiac death and sudden death syndrome.

There are about 50 people taking part and the journey will see the riders leaving London and travelling 95 miles on their first day, spending the night in Calais.  They will then make their way down to Paris via Treport and Beauvais, riding more than 300 miles.

Asked how he got involved with CRY, Matt said: "My father had some heart problems and we received some literature through the door that mentioned the charity and the bike ride.

"Heart problems are also quite common in sports people and with us both being footballers we thought we should get I involved."

The pair will set off on June 21 and have been training since January.  They are currently going out on their bikes three days a week.

Matt said: "We normally to 20 miles a day during the week and then 40-50 miles at the weekend."

This is only half of the 95 miles the pair are expected to ride on their first day, but Matt is not fazed.

He said: "Adam's more confident than I am but I know we'll do it - it'll be fine."

Matt is still aiming to do the ride despite recent surgery.

He said: "I had a knee operation in November.  I was worried I wouldn't be able to go but I have recovered enough to start playing football again.

"The doctor even said the ride would be good for the knee because it's low-impact."

The pair aim to raise £2,500 for the charity.  So far they have organised a race night at Camberley Town's Krooner Park ground and raffled a signed Celtic shirt, making £2,000.

Matt said: "We just need help finding the last £500.
