Bridge walkers step it out to boost charity

Cambridge Evening News  -  24th July 2008

More than 20 friends have taken a step towards raising awareness for a cardiac risk charity.

Fiona and Paul Roberts were joined by friends in an emotional walk and raised more than £2,000 for the charity Cardiac Risk in the Young.

The couple, who run The Brook pub in Brookfields, Cambridge, got involved with the charity following the sudden death of their son Alex in September 2005, aged 20.

The annual 8km fundraising walk involves families, supporters and anyone whose lives have been affected by having loved ones aged 35 or under die from cardiac death.

More than 600 walkers trekked across eight London bridges with each structure representing one of the eight young people who die of cardiac death each week in the UK.  Alison Cox MBE, the charity's founder and chief executive, said: "We are delighted that Fiona and Paul and their wonderful team of supporters were able to join us at this challenging and emotional event, and we thank them so much for their ongoing work with us."

This Sunday Mrs Roberts and the charity will be hosting a cardiac screening session at Cambridge City Football Club from 9am until 5pm.
