A ground-breaking cardiac clinic is getting ready to stage
its next screening – and is looking for residents across Tendring who want
to be tested.
The facility was established by CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young) last year and
is one of only a few in the UK.
So
far more than 100 people aged from 14 – 35 have taken part in the initiative
at Colchester General Hospital. It was established following pressure from
the parents of 17-year-old Frinton youngster Andy Gard, who died of a sudden
cardiac death.
Andy was a fit teenager who played hockey for Clacton. His mother Caroline
said the clinic had proved successful in screening and raising awareness of
the condition.
The next clinic is on March 19 and the aim is to detect previously undiagnosed
heart condition which, if left untreated, can lead to sudden cardiac death
(SCD).
An
ECG (electrocardiogram) is on offer for a greatly subsidised cost of £35.
There are funds set aside for those who genuinely cannot afford it.
Appointments can be made by phoning CRY on 01255 673598 and leaving a
message.
