Scaling heights for charity

Clacton Gazette - 27th August 2004

A friend of a teenager who died suddenly has scaled the highest mountain in Africa to raise money for charity.

Nick Bareham scaled Mount Kilimanjarom to help raise money for Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY).

He and his friends raised £1,800 and they are hoping even more money may come in.

Nick was friends with Frinton teenager Andy Gard who died just days before his 18th birthday suffering from Sudden Cardiac Death.

Nick and Andy were both promising members of Clacton Hockey Clubs.

Since then, Andy’s parents Caroline and Peter Gard, of Glebe Way, Fronton, have campaigned relentlessly to raise money and increase awareness of Sudden Cardiac Death.

More than £90,000 has been raised to date.

Nick, who comes from Clacton, now works as a retail consultant in Pimlico.
