Friends of the late Aaron Lundy are to hold a special day of golf in his honour next month.

Aaron, who was a keen footballer and a hugely talented golfer, tragically died of a heart condition following a soccer match in Portstewart ten years ago. 

The then 19-year-old was one of the country's brightest golfing talents and had represented Ulster. 

On Friday, September 18th - the tenth anniversary of Aaron's death - friends will gather with his former golfing team mates, including local star Graeme McDowell, for a special skins tournament at Portstewart Golf Club.

Organiser, Garry McGrotty, told Times Sport: "It's ten years this year since Aaron's death.  "My brother Barry grew up with Aaron, and as a youngster I used to look up to him. 

"I caddied for Aaron on a few tournaments, and to be honest we just wanted to mark the anniversary and raise funds for the charity. 

"Every year, I and a few others raised money for this great cause in memory of our friend Aaron." 

CRY is a charity that aims to make heart screening accessible to all young people throughout Northern Ireland. 

"We've invited the three guys that played in the Ulster fourball with Aaron back in 1996; that's Graeme McDowell, Davey Jones, the Irish PGA Professional and Stuart Kyle," explained Garry. 

"Our local golfing star, Portstewart's Paul Cutler, who is an Irish International and the East of Ireland champion, will make up the four ball." 

Local businesses are sponsoring each hole of the tournament, and the organisers are inviting everyone along to see the local stars doing what they do best. 

"It's a great opportunity to see top class golfers, so we want as many people as possible to come along," said Garry. 

"We'll have buckets around on the day for donations." 

After the golf, there will be a charity dinner in the new clubhouse at Portstewart. 

Garry added: "Tables of ten cost £500 and this will include a five course meal.  Guest speakers on the night will included representatives from CRY, Ciaran Burke, team captain of the 1996 Ulster Boys' team and Graeme McDowell. 

"All the competitors on the day and other well known golfers have donated sporting memorabilia, so we'll finish the night with an auction." 

"All proceeds and all other monies raised during the day will go to CRY.  This is a day that promises to be a special celebration of the life of Aaron Lundy.
