A brave Crewe mother is raising money for charity
in memory of her teenage son.
Joanne Carter, of Groby Road, has set up a
memorial fund for her son Ben who was a pupil at Coppenhall High School.
He died in 2005, aged 14, of an undetected heart condition.
So far Joanne has raised more than £4,000 for the
charity Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY).
Employees of Rolls-Royce Distribution Generations
Systems gave £110 for the charity from an inter-site football match between
staff from the company's Crewe and Winsford branches.
Housewife Joanne, 41, said: "It was a fitting
tribute to Ben, a keen sportsman who loved football and rugby. A big
thank you to everyone who took part.
"All the staff and pupils at Coppenhall High
School have been very supportive. My son Joseph, 13, has been helping
to raise money at the school through a number of fairs and raffles."
Experts at CRY say at least eight apparently fit
and healthy young people die in the UK every week from undiagnosed heart
conditions.
The charity was founded in 1995 to raise awareness
of the issues surrounding cardiac risk in the young and to encourage faster
diagnosis of and screening of youngsters suffering from symptoms such as
chest pain, exercise related breathlessness, palpitations, dizziness or
fainting.
Mother-of-two Joanne added: Everyone needs to be
more aware of these conditions and the symptoms.
"It's too late now for Ben but I want to educate
young people and to raise awareness so that we can save hundreds of lives
that are unnecessarily and tragically lost every year."
