Marathon effort raises £2,000

Crewe Chronicle - 10th May 2006

Also appeared in the Nantwich Chronicle

A devoted brother has raised more than £2,000 in memory of his sister, who died suddenly of heart failure, aged 29.

Cash is still rolling in after Ian Johnson, 19, took part in the Flora London Marathon as a tribute to Sarah Jane and to boost funs for the charity Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY).

CRY funds research into undiagnosed heart conditions in young people and Ian, who works at Morrison's in Crewe, had no trouble in attracting sponsors for his effort.

His father Harry Johnson said: "Ian completed the marathon in four and three-quarter hours which was tremendous, but it wouldn't have mattered to us is he took all day.

"He did it in memory of his sister and we were extremely proud of him.

"Although it's six years ago since we lost Sarah Jane, it seems like yesterday.

Sarah Jane died suddenly as a result of an  undiagnosed heart condition mirroring many similar stories from across the UK.

Ian, of Lime Tree Avenue in Crewe, followed in the footsteps of brother John, who raised £1,600 for CRY in last year's race.  It was his first marathon and he trained for months.

According to CRY, half a dozen seemingly healthy young people die from undetected heart problems in the UK every week.
