Nurse's death by a clock

Daily Mirror - 29th April 2006

By Stephen White

A nurse died from heart failure when her alarm clock went off at 6am.

Lisa Browne, 27, had a heart disorder and the shock caused it to stop.

Experts have discovered the paediatric nurse suffered from the rare Long QT syndrome (LQT2).

The condition affects the electrical system of the heart and can cause sudden unexplained death.

Mum Doreen Harley, 58, suspected her daughter had died of the hereditary disorder and campaigned for a second inquest.

At the first 1998 inquest, an open verdict was recorded on married Lisa, who worked at the Countess of Chester Hospital.

At a new inquest in Warrington yesterday, the coroner for Cheshire, Nicholas Rheinberg ruled Lisa died from heart failure due to LQT2 and recorded a verdict of death by natural causes.

Lisa's father, sister and two young nephews also have the heart disorder.

Doreen, of Connah's Quay, Flintshire, said: "An ECG test could well have saved Lisa's life."
