A leading cardiac charity has been praised for its work by
Welsh politicians.
Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) is in its 10th
anniversary year and the charity held an awareness event in Cardiff Bay at the
Welsh Assembly building.
Every week eight apparently fit and healthy young people die in
the UK from undiagnosed heart conditions.
CRY is a charity, founded in May 1995 by Deeside woman Doreen
Harley, to raise awareness of cardiac risk in the young.
They offer support to those who have suffered a loss, promote
heart screening, donate medical equipment to doctors’ surgeries and hospitals
and contribute to medical research.
In recognition of their 10th year of hard work, last
week CRY held their first awareness-raising campaign and, in recognition of
this, the National Assembly for Wales welcomed CRY to their Cardiff Bay
building to provide information to Assembly members and staff.
Alyn and Deeside AM Carl Sargeant said: "The sudden death of an
apparently fit and healthy young person is absolutely devastating to a family,
but it is very encouraging there is an organisation like CRY which offers
support to such families who need it.
"CRY
is important because it has taken a lead in bringing awareness to the
community, particularly the young community and the athletic community, about
the risks to young people.
"It actually brings awareness of health to the young person who
may not think about it or worry about it."
