With
these responsibilities (and having a young family) time is precious for me, but
so is life. I feel that with the devolved Scottish Government, and recent
announcements on screening by the Scottish Cabinet Secretary Nicola Sturgeon MSP,
better Scottish representation is important."
Derek
Mackay was first elected to Renfrewshire Council in May 1999 for the Blythswood
Ward in Renfrew. He served on a number of committees and policy boards
including the Community & Family Care Policy Board which, in addition to Social
work, also has responsibility for health and care issues.
Previously a parliamentary researcher for an MSP he continues to serve the SNP
nationally as an Area Organiser and National Convenor of the Appeals Committee.
On 17 May 2007 Derek became Leader of Renfrewshire Council.
Derek was raised in Renfrew, where he continues to live with wife Jennifer and
sons Andrew and James.
