Ryan's express treble

Doctors and porters raise £1,500 for charity CRY at Avenue Stadium

Dorset Echo  - 15th May  2007

By Adam Summers

Ryan Moss hammered home a fine hat-trick for the Porters as they won 6-3 against the Medics in the annual West Dorset Hospital charity showdown match at the Avenue Stadium.

The game raised at least £1,500 for the Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) and the wet weather did not dampen the spectacle.

CRY was chosen in honour of Ryan's sister Laura who suffered cardiac arrest and died in 1997.

Porters player Lee Clarke said: "It was nice that Ryan got a hat-trick and there was a really good turn out by the hospital staff despite the horrible weather."

Former Weymouth player Ian Hutchinson made an appearance for the Porters.

Clarke added: "Hutch used to be a porter and he always comes back and plays for us.  As usual he showed some good touches."

Zach Chinnet grabbed a brace for the Porters whose other strike came from Dan O'Connor.

The latter's bullet header after a cross from the left was the pick of the goals.  Mike Phelan, Chris Nelson and Rob Cooke replied for the Medics.

Ryan and Laura's mother Gloria said: "I think we have raised about £1,500 and I think there will be more on top of that.

"The match was supposed to be a friendly but it was actually quite competitive.

"it was nice to see everyone from the hospital come down to support the game.  We al came from different departments and events like these help bring the community together.

"We're going to have a couple more events like a skittles and darts night.

"Everyone who has been involved has been fantastic and with the money we've raised we are going to buy one of possibly two ECG machines for West Dorset6 Hospital.

It's been ten years since Laura's death and it's a god way to use the money to make sure it stays in Dorset."
