This event will provide new and existing CRY supporters, including corporate and family teams, with an opportunity to get together and commemorate or support young people and to enjoy a beautiful walk in the Wear Valley.

Drinks will be available at the start and finish. Balloons and certificates will also be provided. CRY T-shirts will be sent to walkers in advance, to wear on the day.

The route includes great views of Durham’s iconic landmarks, including the famous cathedral and castle, a World Heritage site.

The cathedral has been voted Britain’s favourite old building and the whole city is steeped in history.

Why not take a stroll along the ancient, winding lanes and pay a visit to the Town Hall, covered market or Botanic Gardens whilst you are in Durham?

Please join us on this CRY event to raise awareness and funds and help save young lives.

We are very grateful to the Durham Amateur Rowing Club and Northumbrian Water for their support for this event by providing a venue and the water for the walkers respectively.

Where and when is it?

The walk follows a circular route around the River Wear, starting and finishing at Durham Amateur Rowing Club. Registration opens at 10.30am on the day and the walk will start at midday.

How long is the walk?

7km (just over 4 miles). As a guide, the route should take about 2 hours at an average walking pace.

How much does it cost to enter?

Adult = £15 on the day. 16 and under = free, but must be accompanied by an adult.

Who can take part?

Anyone with a moderate level of fitness. All ages are welcome but those aged 16 and under must be accompanied by an adult.

Do I have to raise sponsorship?

Your entry fee goes towards the cost of running the event safely. There is no obligation to fundraise, but we are very grateful for any donations or sponsorship raised. This year, funds raised from the event will go exclusively towards CRY's Research Fellowship Programme (for more details please see overleaf) which means we are unable to allocate sponsorship to ringfenced memorial funds.

Do I have to be in a team?

Not at all. Many people will be taking part on their own. Individual walkers will leave first as a group, so there will be an opportunity to meet others who are walking on their own. If you would like to take part as a team, why not get a group of friends, colleagues or family together?

Anything else I need to know?

Durham is a fascinating city, so why not make a weekend of it and take in its many sights and attractions?  We recommend booking accommodation as soon as possible.

How can I enter?
Registration has now closed.  You can however still register on the day by going to the Durham Amateur Rowing Club (see map above) and signing up on the day.  Registration will open at 10:30am and it is £15 to register on the day.  If you have any questions about registering on the day please phone the CRY office (open Mon-Fri 9am-5pm).

Any other questions?

Please call the fundraising team on 01737 363222 or e-mail events@c-r-y.org.uk if you have any questions.

This year, funds raised from the event will go exclusively towards CRY's Research Fellowship Programme (for more details please seeoverleaf) which means we are unable to allocate sponsorship to ringfenced memorial funds.

What this walk achieves for CRY:

This year, sponsorship and donations raised from the Bridges Walk will go towards funding CRY's Research Fellowship Programme, which is essential to the services we offer. CRY currently funds 6 doctors, for 2 years, who specialise in the field of inherited cardiac conditions, sudden cardiac death, screening and sports cardiology. The research that they produce advances our understanding of conditions that can lead to young sudden cardiac death. £50,000 will fund a Research Fellow for 1 year, so if 1000 people raise £50 each in sponsorship we could fund a Research Fellow's valuable work for a full year.

For every £1 donated to fund a Research Fellow:

  • ·50p will go towards fast track screening services for families who have been affected by young sudden cardiac death

  • ·30p will go towards medical research into young sudden cardiac death

  • ·20p will go towards our national screening programme for young people (aged 14-35 years)

·     Over one year, a CRY funded Research Fellow will:

  • ·     Facilitate 250 fast-track referrals to the CRY Centre for Inherited Cardiovascular Conditions and Sports Cardiology at St George's Hospital, London. Families can be seen at these fast-track clinics within a few weeks of referral after the sudden death of a family member.

  • ·     Publish at least 2 peer reviewed articles in leading journals and present their research at international conferences.

  • ·     Support the screening of 2000 people. CRY Research Fellows carry out consultations with every person CRY tests, and manage any abnormal screening results.
