A dedicated mum has helped raise awareness and
more than £30,000 for a charity after her 14-year-old son died from an
undiagnosed heart condition.
Claire Prosser of Elers Road, Ealing, lost her son
tom Clabburn four years ago. Tom went to Little Ealing Primary and
Drayton Manor High schools and belonged to Questors Youth Theatre and
Hanwell Town Youth Football Club.
After his death Mrs Prosser and her husband Paul
set up the Tom Clabburn Memorial Fund to raise money and awareness of the
charity Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY), which has organised a number of
free heart screenings in Middlesex for young people.
She was nominated by a friend, Linda Panzer, of Gunleigh Road, Ealing who, with her family raised money for CRY by crossing
the Alps.
Mrs Panzer said: "Claire has become dedicated to
raising funds and awareness, both locally and nationally for CRY.
"Her efforts to raise funds have included things
like book sales, sponsorship and even the making of a radio show where she
shared her innermost self with the public about the shock of losing her son.
"Claire has been a community catalyst and ensured
that local youngsters have taken advantage of the free heart screenings -
these being made possible by the fundraising she has done.
"I should also mention though that Claire had the
unstinting support and to some degree protection of a small group of
'community women', mainly met through school friendships made by her son Tom
many years ago.
"Whilst Claire undoubtedly has given a great deal
of herself, there should also be recognition for the women who have been
with her every step of the way and participated in the community activity
for the charity.
"These women are Sue Howells, Gina Bentley, Vicki
Pearson, Stephanie Smith and Tess Gomm - there should be care and
acknowledgement of the unsung carers too.,"
Claire, in her 50's, said: "I am touched that I
have been nominated for this award. Four years ago I had never heard
of Cardiac Risk in the Young - now it has become a huge support to my family
as we deal with the aftermath of Tom's death.
"Fundraising, by running book sales which help to
fund screenings in Ealing, is just one way that we can help raise awareness
of CRY, which is doing so much to get young people screened and to support
families who have lost a child."
