Sir – As the local representative of Cardiac Risk
in the Young, I was shocked and horrified to read of the fact that four young
girls from the Clacton area have been collecting sponsorship money
fraudulently by claiming to be taking part in a sponsored event.
I would urge anyone who is
approached by someone they do not know and who is claiming to collect money
for CRY to check the authenticity of those individuals by either contacting
myself on 01255 673598 or the charity head quarters on 01737 363222. I would
also advise against giving money without proof that the individual(s)
concerned have completed the event.
There are many charities whose
sponsorship forms are available via the Internet, and while most individuals
are genuine and CRY has not experienced problems like this before, this case
has highlighted a loophole and CRY will be looking at possible and practical
ways of tightening up in the future.
It is sad that we have
individuals who seek to prosper in this way, especially this week after the
very successful launch celebrating CRY’s 10th anniversary with the
publication of local schoolgirl Julie Tanner’s book of inspirational quotes,
which is now available in local bookshops.
