Deputy Mayor presents marathon donations

Eastbourne Herald - 13th January 2006

The deputy mayor will be presenting donations accumulated by the dedicated support of the Beach Head Marathon volunteers to the groups and organisations that assisted with the staging of the 2005 event.

The cheques total an impressive £3,210.

Councillor Colin Belsey said,: "The time and effort that the volunteers put in to the organising and running of the Beachy Head Marathon is paramount and without their support the event could not be the success it is today.

"It will give me great pleasure to present the cheques to the voluntary organisations on Tuesday by a way of thank you for their devotion to the event."

Well over 100 volunteers and a number of voluntary teams offered their time to help the Beachy Head Marathon go ahead and make it possible for this money to be raised.  St John Ambulance, Sussex Police Volunteer Cadets, Sea Cadets, Rotary Club of Hailsham, Raynet, HM Coastguard, Eastbourne, HM Coastguard Birling Gap, Beachy Head Ramblers, Eastbourne Voluntary Lifeguards, and the Mayor of Eastbourne's Charity; CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young) all assisted in the staging of the 2005 event and will be receiving cheques on Tuesday evening.

Hailsham Rotary Club has already stated that it will use its Beachy Head Marathon donation to purchase a herd of goats for a village in Ethiopia.

The charity FARM-Africa, of which Michael Palin is the patron, will organise the purchase with each goat costing just £27.

The donation will enable the villagers to become self-sufficient; it will improve the health of the children with fresh milk and meat and will also remove the need for constant food aid.

The Beachy Head Marathon is already making the first preparations for this year's event taking place on Saturday 28 October.  Entries will open for participants in April.
