Ellery McGowan becomes oldest woman to complete iconic swim in Cape Town

Ellery McGowan, 71, swimming teacher and coach at Charterhouse School, Godalming, took on a 7.5k open water swimming challenge in memory of her son James McGowan. The swim took place in Cape Town between Robben Island and Blouberg on the 14th February 2018. Ellery swam alongside thirteen others in memory of her son, James McGowan, who passed away in 2015.

Ellery said, “James, my youngest son, spent many holidays in Cape Town, mainly coinciding with World Cup events as he was a keen sportsman. I thought of him a lot during my swim and know that he would be proud with what I achieved.”
