School takes fundraising to heart for charity

Epping Forest Guardian  - 1st February 2007

Parents, friends and staff at Moreton Primary School raised £950 when they held a bingo night in aid of the charity Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY).

Friends of the school organised the event in memory of PC Graham Button, who was a victim of Sudden Adult Death Syndrome last October.

One of the organisers, Phillipa Giles, said: "PC Button's wife and children wanted to support CRY because it has been very supportive to them in coming to terms with what happened.  The night went really well, and we're thrilled to pieces with the money raised."

The school raised £650 on the night and also received a £300 donation from one of the parent's employers.

PC Button's two children, Lauren and Daniel, who attend Moreton Primary School, led the bingo calling.

Guests also enjoyed a sausage and mash supper beforehand.

Mrs Giles said PC Button's case emphasises the importance of petitioning the Government to introduce heart screening for everyone from the age of 14, as happens in many European Countries.

She said his death was all the more tragic because he had just joined the police force and undergone a full medical examination.
