Family raises cash for CRY

Evening Chronicle, Newcastle - 27th August 2004

Fundraising in memory of a super-fit student who died suddenly got off to a great start when relatives and friends stepped out on a sponsored walk.

Leading the 38-strong team of walkers were the little nephew and niece of Jimmy Wilson, 24, who died in his sleep at the family home in Washington.

Known as Gentle Giant, he went to bed in the early hours of January 2 this year after a get-together with family and friends.  But for the next morning paramedics confirmed he was dead.

Family and friends in the Sulgrave decided to raise funds for Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY), which wants the Government to introduce a heart screening programme for young people.  Jimmy’s mum said: “we had never even heard about CRY before Jimmy’s death and we really wanted to raise awareness so others do not have to go through the same heartache we have been through.”
