Brother's inspiration behind Grace's 'list'

Express & Star (Wolverhampton) -  25th October 2011

When Grace Collins's brother Oliver passed away suddenly in his sleep aged 23, the entire family was left devastated by the loss.

But five years on, Grace has vowed to live her life to the fullest, drawing up a list of things she wants to do before she hits 23.

Appearing on television, holding a tarantula, buying a pair of designer shoes and learning to do the splits are just some of the things that appear on the 22-year-old's to do list.

And Grace, of Walsall, is attracting a legion of fans by writing about her experiences on the internet as she sets about ticking them off.

"I really wanted to do something good and positive to make me really remember I'm alive and life is too short not to make the most of it."  says Grace, who now lives in rushall.

"So one night I sat and made a list with my housemate over a glass of wine of things I wanted to do."

Grace aims to complete the 23-strong list before her birthday in June next year and must provide evidence of each challenge.

It will culminate in a charity Bungee Jump to raise money for CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young).

Grace's family has been working with the charity since Oliver passed away suddenly on March 23, 2006.

The football-mad civil servant contractor cytomegalovirus myocarditis infection which killed off parts of his heart and resulted in multiple organ failure.

"Ever since that day I have seen my life completely different," says Grace.

"When I turned 22 it soon dawned on me that my next birthday would be 23 and I would be the same age as Oliver.

"I owe it to Oliver to live my life to the full and have no regrets, just as I am sure he would.

"Oliver was such a motivated p0erson.  He was always doing things, so I feel everybody should be doing the same.

"There's so much sadness in the world but life it to live and enjoy yourself.

"If I can inspire one person to do something they never thought they would do, I'll be happy."

So far, Grace has ticket three things off her list.

She has fulfilled her ambition to set up a blog, been on a blind date and appeared on television having managed to bag a front row seat at the filming of Strictly Come Dancing.

Also on the list is Grace's lifelong ambition to own a pair of designer shoes - she has her eye on a pair of iconic red-soled Christian Louboutins - getting a tattoo and a piercing.

There are also places she wants to visit.  Having already been to Wales and Ireland, she wants to complete the British Isles with a trip to Scotland, and hopes to go to Paris and New York.

The Big Apple is on the list after Oliver saved up his money and went to live there for six months.

"I've worked out I have to do around three things a month," says Grace, who is office manager at a health and safety company in Cannock.

"I think next month it's going to be the piercing, but some of them, like the streaking, I'm not quite sure how I'm going to do it.

"I think it's going to be a busy and expensive few months.

"But you only get one shot at life and if you live it right, once is enough," she adds.
