Flintshire politicians are
backing a new screening campaign for young people who are at risk of a
heart attack.
Alyn and Deeside MP Mark Tami and
AM Carl Sargeant have joined Doreen Harley, Flintshire’s representative for
Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) in launching a postcard campaign depicting
eight victims of sudden cardiac death.
The postcards will be sent to MPs
at Westminster to lobby for their support in getting screening for high-risk
families.
One of those featured on the cards
is Mrs Harley’s eldest daughter, Lisa Jane Browne, who died in 1998 aged 27.
Cardiologists believe Lisa died
from Long QT Syndrome.
Mrs Harley, from Connah’s Quay,
said: “If Lisa had been offered an ECG test, it is more than likely that she
would be here today. CRY’s ultimate aim is to get an ECG offered to all
teenagers around the age of 14.”
Mr Tami said: “I am determined to
ensure as many MPs as possible back the CRY campaign and I will be speaking
with those have not yet joined the All Part Group to seek their backing.”
Mr Sargeant added: “All the eight
victims pictured on the Wales postcard had no apparent symptoms or history of
bad health, yet it’s widely acknowledged many of the hundreds of sudden deaths
that occur every year in the UK could be prevented if simple cardiac screening
was made more accessible.”
