The
FA, the PFA, the Football Foundation and charity CRY, recently launched
a joint initiative which aims to raise awareness of sudden cardiac death
in the young.
The
Secretary of State for Media, Culture and Sport - Andy Burnham MP - was joined
at 11 Downing Street by CRY families whose children or partners died
suddenly whilst playing football, at an event to raise awareness of
sudden cardiac death in the young.
New UEFA regulations mean that as of August
2008, every player who is in the first squad at a football club must
have as a minimum one electrocardiogram (ECG) test and one
echocardiogram (Echo) test in their personal medical records.
In addition, these two heart tests must be
conducted before the player's 21st birthday; or must be conducted as
soon as possible for older players who have not previously had their
hearts tested.
Players are also further reminded and
encouraged to report any symptoms they are concerned about to their club
doctor.
"I look forward to working closely with CRY
in the future and supporting their campaign to make screening widely
available across the whole of the UK."
