Pals' tribute to tragic James

Formby Times - 18th January 2007

By Lindsay Young

A group from Formby which fundraised in memory of a boy who collapsed and died on a beach has thanked supporters.

Formby Shotokan Karate Club raised more than £1,762 in a 50-miole cycle ride following the death of James Poynton, 12, who collapsed and died in the arms of his father Jim, a former sensei at the club.

The cycle challenge, led by club instructor Mike Roach, 42 and son John, 13, was undertaken by youngsters from the Formby club, parents and members of Crosby Shotokan Karate.

James died of sudden death syndrome after a suspected cardiac arrest, walking on West Kirby beach in June.  the ride, also undertaken by James's father, raised money for CRY, which researched cardiac risk in young people.

Items were auctioned on e-bay including a Liverpool Football Club stadium tour and a signed Wigan Athletic shirt donated by Leighton Baines.

Mike said: "I'm just glad there were people who backed me up who were behind me all the way.

"I would like to say thank you to everyone for their support including Renco Contractor Ltd where I work, Acorn Insurance, West Lancashire District Council members, the children at the karate clubs, taxi drivers and passers by."

James's family has not raised more than £10,000 for the charity.  His father said: "I feel very humbled by all the things they have done.

"You realise how much everyone cares and that you are not on your own.

"It helps us because we think he hasn't died in vain and we have hopefully done good for others."

CRY offers support and counselling to families of young who have died from SDS and funds research.
