Sportsmen swing into action for a golf-themed fundraiser

Frome & Somerset Standard - 4th May  2006

Golfers in Frome have raised an impressive sum of money for two of the area's flourishing charities.

During the last year the captain of Frome's Critchill Golf Club, Steve Burns, has been using his hobby to raise much-needed funds for Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) and Claverton Cats and Dogs Home.

Golf-themed fundraising techniques have included fines for unfortunate players whose shots land in the water instead of the intended fairway, and a captain's charity golf day.

This week, at the closing stages of Mr Burn's year-long term as captain, the impressive final fundraising figure of £4,000 was counted.

As a result, cheques for £3,000 and £1,000 were written and then generously presented to Shirley Wort of the Julian Wort Memorial Fund, a branch of CRY, and to Chris Pope of Claverton Cats and Dogs Home.

Mr Burns said: "I would like to thank everyone for their fantastic support throughout my year as captain.

I would especially like to thank people for their support at the bar when the drinks were on me following my first and only hole in one one the 10th."

All of the money raised by the golfers will go towards CRY's efforts to save the lives of the eight apparently fit and healthy young people who die of undiagnosed heart conditions every week in the United Kingdom.

The money will also be used by the Claverton Cats and Dogs Home in order to care for and rescue any of the area's sick, unwanted or ill-treated animals.
