More than 80 people have already signed up for the
first cardiac screening event in the Harwich area.
The event, which is being held at Harwich and
Parkeston Football Club, in Dovercourt's Main Road, has been totally funded
by the Marcus Armstrong Memorial Fund.
The fund was set up after Marcus died suddenly
from an undetected heart condition in May 2006. He was 28.
Since then, his parents Tony and Jackie have
received phenomenal support from local people and organisations to raise
funds in their son's memory to set up screening events to prevent other
people losing a loved one prematurely.
More than £20,000 has been raised so far.
The screening unit is provided by Cardiac Risk in
the Young (CRY) which has developed a multi-disciplinary team of clinicians.
these operate mobile screening events in the
community and sports clubs around the UK.
Fifty places are still available for the first
event which is being held throughout the day on August 1.
The age range is for those who are 14 to 35 and
invitations have been sent to players from Harwich and Parkeston Football
Club, Harwich and Dovercourt Golf and Cricket clubs, Little Oakley Football
Clubs and others.
Mr Armstrong said: "The family stress to all young
people to take up these remaining places to ensure they have the opportunity
to have any problem diagnosed before it is too late."
