Campaign to raise CRY awareness

Heartland Evening News -  16th February 2009

An emotive campaign is being launched in the Midlands to highlight the tragic legacy of young people dying suddenly.

Residents of the region are the least likely to be aware that a simple test known as an ECG can detect a potentially fatal heart condition in young people.

Expert Dr Sharma said: "We currently estimate that well over 500 young people die suddenly every year in the UK from sudden cardiac death - and that figure could be just the tip of the iceberg.

"Many of these young people are in their teens and early -20's - at the prime of their lives.  Looking at predicted life-expectancies for the 21st century, we can assume that the majority of these young victims are being robbed of 50 to 60 years of their lives.  Poignantly, their families are being robbed of their 'futures' and watching them grow up and grow old."

CRY works with and supports families who have been devastated by this tragic condition, including the Keen family from Nuneaton who lost Claire to the condition and who now fundraise in her memory.
