Memorial tennis tournament in aid of medical help
group
A
smashing day of family fun was served up at a charity tennis day held in
memory of a popular Great Amwell teenager.
Around 40
parents and children paired up and took to the courts in a friendly tournament
on Sunday last week organised by Broxbourne Tennis Club in honour of James
Wood, an ex-pupil of Hertford Heath independent school, Haileybury.
It netted £400
for the charity CRY (Cardiac Risk in Young People), which gave James’s family,
of Yearling Close, care and support when he tragically died of Sudden
Arrhythmia Death Syndrome (SADS) in September 2002, just days after his 15th
birthday.
The James Wood
Memorial Tournament, now in its second year, was held two days before the
anniversary of James’s death and three days after what would have been his 17th
birthday.
Mike Seymour,
head coach at the tennis club, said: “It was an excellent day. Not only did
everyone have a great time, we also managed to raise a decent amount for the
charity.
“James was a
popular member here and is greatly missed. His death was a tragic loss and we
hope the tournament will continue as an annual event.”
Winning team Paul and Steve
Andrews, of Hoddesdon, were presented with a trophy donated by James’s mother
Gill, who had it specially inscribed for the event.
