1.9K closer to screening programme

Hull Daily Mail   -  12th September 2011

By Claudia Tanner

The parents of a boy who died suddenly from a rare heart condition are a step closer to reaching their fundraising target.

Donna and rich Fell raised almost £1,900 at the weekend to bring heart screening for young people in East Yorkshire.

Josh Fell, 15, of Hornsea, had been playing football with friends when he suffered from Sudden Arrhythmia Death Syndrome (SADS) in June.

Rich said fundraising was giving the family something to focus on as they grieve.

He said: "We don't want other people to go through the heartache we've been through.

"With a simple ECG test, conditions can be picked up."

As previously reported in the Mail, Josh's family now face an agonising wait for test results.

Josh's sister, Jasmine, 9, has been told she has an irregular heart rhythm, which could mean she has a rare heart condition.

Josh's family and friends raised more than £1,650 on Saturday at a coffee morning held at Hornsea Parish Hall.

In the evening, Rich celebrated his 40th birthday at Leven Sports Hall and raised more than £200 in donations.

Rich, 40, said the family were still in shock following Josh's death.

He said: "We still can't believe it's happened.

"I walk up the stairs and expect to see Josh sitting there on his computer or to hear him playing football outside with his mates.  The house is too quiet.

"Not only did this happen to Josh, but now something could  be wrong with Jasmine too.,"

The family has been told Jasmine could have Long QT Syndrome, one of the conditions that comes under the umbrella terms of SADS.

£9,000 in memory of Josh

Josh's family and friends have raised £9,000 in his memory since he died in in June.

His parents, Rich, and Donna, have donated £5,000 of that to Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY), a charity that raises awareness of heart conditions in your people.

The remaining £4,000 will go towards a two-day screening programme in Hornsea in April, for which they need to raise a further £3,000.

The tests, for 14 to 35-year-olds, will be available for those who register through the Cry website at www.c-r-y.org.uk

Donna and Rich have organised a race night at The Floral Hall in Hornsea on Friday, October 21, at 8pm.

Tickets cost £5 and can be bought by calling 07725 962 622.
