Preston and Man United team up for charity at Deepdale

Lancashire Evening Post  -  10th January  2008

Preston is to join forces with Manchester in the name of charity to celebrate footballing links between the two cities.

Manchester United greats, former goal keeper Alex Stepney and midfielder Paddy Crerand, along with Sir Tom Finney, will head an all-star line-up at a special football dinner at Preston North End.

At least 20 other players who have contributed to the history of both clubs will also be at the event in The Great Room at Deepdale on March 13.

The night, being billed as The Tale of Two Cities, will raise money for the LEP's £25,000 Live in Hope appeal to save a centre for domestic violence victims, and CRY - Cardiac Risk in the Young.

The close relationship between the cities dates back to 1902 when Newton Heath changed their name to Manchester United and PNE invited the new team to Deepdale for a pre-season friendly to celebrate Preston Guild.

Yesterday, Sir Tom Finney and Alex Stepney kicked off the fund-raising by presenting fund-raising memorabilia to the mayor, Councillor Christine Abram.

Signed photographs of David Beckham and Teddy Sheringham will be up for auction, along with a shirt signed by Ryan Giggs.  Councillor Abram said she hoped £5,000 would be raised.

Her husband, Norman, a United fan, added: "We've had a lot of enquiries from ex-footballers and people who supported United and Preston in the 60's."

Tickets, priced £65 each or £600 for a table of 10, are available by ringing 01562 887323.
