A heartfelt plea by mum

Lancashire Evening Post - 1st July 2005

A bereaved mum has raised £415 in memory of her son after manning a supermarket stand to raise awareness of sudden adult death syndrome.  Ruth Lowe was promoting the Cardiac Risk in the Young charity in Boots, Fulwood, to parents of people who may be at risk.

Her son, Andrew Parr, was 21 when he collapsed at Tokyo Jo’s night club in Preston in the early hours of Easter Monday.  A post mortem examination revealed Andrew, of Whittle Green, Woodplumpton, had suffered a heart attack.

Mrs Lowe believes hundreds of deaths could be prevented if simple cardiac screening was more accessible to younger people.

The cash was raised when 206 shoppers attempted to guess the weight of a fruitcake donated by Lathams of Broughton.

The proceeds will go into Andrew’s memorial fund which is aiming to raise £7,000 for a mobile cardiac screening unit to visit Preston.
