The Darwen branch of a heart charity has come out
top for screening young people for potentially fatal defects.
The Neil Wickers and David Staff Memorial Fund,
set up following the sudden deaths of two young Darwen men, support the
charity Cardiac Risk in the Young.
CRY provides medical information on the causes of
unexpected cardiac death in the young and counselling for bereaved families.
In the past 10 years the Darwen fund has been
north of England leader in raising awareness and holding screening sessions,
after which at least 18 people have sought treatment for heart defects.
This Saturday, they are holding an autumn fair to
raise money for CRY.
Stalls with ladies' clothes, books, raffles, toys
and gifts will be available from 10am to 1pm at Highfield Working Men's
Club, Ratcliffe Street.
Admission is free and everyone is welcome.
For more information on the charity and the fair,
call Irene Wickers on 01254 707 895.
