The father of a 15-year-old aspiring sportsman who
died after collapsing at football training has vowed to keep his memory
alive.
Ben Daniels, who was a pupil at Ravens Wood School
in Bromley, was taken to hospital on March 5 after he fell ill in Queensmead
Recreation Ground, Shortlands, and died three days later.
His dad Paul said: "We were in complete shock.
It was our tsunami. You couldn't see it coming.
"One minute he was bouncing off to go and play
football with not a care in the world. The next minute he was gone.
"Ben had an undiagnosed and undetected heart
condition.
"He was incredibly fit and healthy and completely
asymptomatic.
"Throughout his whole life there was nothing which
suggested he needed to be screened for his cardiac health."
Ben, who lived in Clarence road, Bickley, was an
extremely active sportsman who played cricket at the Old Elthamians Cricket
Club in Foxbury Avenue, Chislehurst and tennis at Bromley Lawn Tennis Club.
His parents Paul, 49 and Helena, 47, are
campaigning for a cardiac screening programme for youngsters in the sporting
communities Ben was part of by setting up a £100,000 memorial fund.
Paul said: "You can never come to terms with
something like this.
"You find an inner strength, a cause which enables
you to keep his memory alive.
"The tragedy we felt then provides us with a cause
which enables us to impact on other people's lives."
To raise awareness of sudden cardiac death in the
young, Ben's football team sports the logo of charity CRY (Cardiac Risk in
the Young) on their shirts.
Paul added: "We have had tremendous support from
the community and from the Old Elthamians Cricket club and the Ex-Blues
Football Club and Ravens Wood School have been fantastic in everything
they've done.
"We want Ben to be remembered for what he achieved
in his life and for what he is leaving us with, which is a cause in his name
for the benefit of others.
Ben's friends have organised a fundraising
night at 7.30pm on Saturday at the Old Elthamians with proceeds going
towards a new score box at the cricket club in Ben's memory, as well as CRY.
For tickets to the event, which cost £10 for
adults and £5 for under-16's, call Cook and Matthews Sport on 020 8467 6633.
