South Antrim MP, William McCrea has given his
backing to a campaign designed to highlight cardiac death in young people.
Speaking in support of the CRY
campaign, Dr. McCrea said he had been “touched and deeply moved” by letters
and postcards he received over the devastating condition which claims the
lives of around eight young people a week in the UK.
The DUP politician is hoping
to meet the Chief Executive of the CRY campaign in Northern Ireland, Alison
Cox, to learn more about the condition and how many deaths could be
prevented.
He said: “The lobby postcards
that I have received portray the photographs of eight young people whose lives
were tragically cut short by sudden cardiac death.”
He added: “I hope to raise
this matter with my party colleague and DUP health spokesperson, Iris
Robinson, to see how a combined effort can be mounted to ensure that this
potentially fatal condition is detected at an early age and that tragedy can
be averted through early diagnosis and treatment.”
