Martyn's mates pay tribute with skydive

North Devon Journal - 23rd November 2006

By Laura Churchill

The memory of a young Hartland man who would have just turned 21 has been marked by a charity sky dive.

Martyn Luckett died of sudden adult death syndrome, SADS, aged 19, in July last year.

Since his death Martyn's family and friends have been constantly fundraising for the charity Cardiac Risk in the Young, CRY, and the skydive was the latest event.

Family friends Zoe Sims, Andrew Henderson, Vicki Beer and Chelsea Thorne all took part in the 10,000ft jump from Honiton airfield.

The skydive took place on November 12 - the day before Martyn would have turned 21.

The jump raised £1,500 for the Surrey-based charity, bringing the total that Martyn's friends and family have raised to more than £7,000.

One of the skydivers, Zoe Sims, said: "We would like to thank Martyn's sister Charlotte who prompted us to do the scariest thing in our lives, and encouraged and helped organise us to take part in a very worthwhile cause."

Charlotte said: "Eight young people who are apparently fit and healthy die of ADS a week and until Martyn was taken from us, I was unaware of SADS.

"I think it is amazing what my friends have done for the charity.

"Hopefully it will make people aware of the condition."

Zoe would also like to thank the Old Vicarage Dental Surgery; Peter, Peter and Wright Solicitors, and Rob and Jackie Thisby from Warren House nursing home.
