The family of a young sportsman who died while
playing footballl has raised £1,550 for charity.
Andy Hartlebury, a popular 21-year-old from
Dalton, died in January after collapsing during a game at the Park Leisure
Centre all-weather pitch in Barrow.
Andy died of a heart condition known as
myocarditis, which was triggered by a virus he wasn't even aware he had.
The charity to benefit, CRY, which stands for
Cardiac Risk in the Young, helps raise awareness of such conditions.
Andy's mum Cath is determined to do all she can to
help other parents realise that their children could be at risk too, and
what can be done to prevent such premature deaths.
She said: "We want to thank everyone that came
along on the night and for everyone who donated.
"I know now that Andy could have been tested and
his death may have been prevented, so if we can raise enough money to
provide one piece of equipment for a surgery we would be happy with that.
"It matters to me that if we can stop one person
going through what we have been through then we have done some good."
The memorial event was held at The Engineers Club,
Abbey Road, Barrow, and saw top local bands such as Slipstream, Black Star,
and duo, Freefall playing, and hundreds of friends and family turning out to
remember the fun-loving young man.
Andy's friend Chris Douglas, 19, also performed a
guitar solo on the night.
Car enthusiast Andy's mum and dad, Cath, 40, and
Alan, 46, were there with his brother and sisters Sarah, 18, Alison, 15 and
Stephen 12. A heartfelt poem was written by Nicola Matthews, a close
friend of Andy's.
