A second memorial fun day to pay tribute to
nine-year-old Northampton girl Jade Johnstone, who died suddenly last year
has once again been a roaring success.
Jade collapsed and died during a swimming lesson
at The Duston School in January 2008 as a result of sudden death syndrome.
A fun day in her memory raised more than £2,000
for charity Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) last August, and was such a
success that her parents, John and Jan, decided to hold another one over the
holiday weekend.
The event was held at the Thomas Becket pub
in St James, where Jade's family and friends met for a day of games and
dancing.
Jade's mother, Jan, aged 39, who was there with
husband, John aged 52, said she was confident the day would hit her new
fundraising target of £3,000.
She said: "We call it Jade's Day, because it's all
about her, and we are going to do it every Bank Holiday.
"Jade was happy and healthy and going to school
and then she had her swimming lesson and she died. I want to stop that
happening to another family. As a parent, you always wonder if there's
anything you could have done, but there wasn't.
"Doing this is my way of doing something for her.
It's a happy day, it brings family and friends together."
There was also an auction, the lots of which
included balloon rides and other goodies Jan has acquired over the last few
months.
Representatives from CRY, Joan and Tony Hillier,
both aged 59, were at the event to raise awareness of sudden death syndrome.
They lost their daughter, Laura, from Blisworth, to sudden death six years
ago, when she was just 21.
Joan said: "We have found through research that
every week 12 healthy, young people die of undiagnosed heart problems, most
of which would have been detected by an electrocardiogram (heart scan).
Our aim is to make people aware of these heart
conditions. But this is Jade's day, it's all about Jade."
