Sixty youngsters traded kicks and
punches during a charity karate championship.
The martial arts students, who were
all under 16, helped raise more than £5400 during eh first Can
Do Martial Arts tournament at White Horse Leisure Centre, in
Abingdon.
Money from the event will be donated
to Asthma UK and Cardiac Risk in the Young.
The students took part in either
Kumite - sparring, in which they can hit each other in the head
or body, or Kata - a solo event in which they must perform a
sequence of moves in the correct order.
Organiser Virginia Richardson said:
"There's been a real buzz today as this was the first tournament
for many of the children.
"Some of our students are definitely
worth looking out for in the future and I was very proud and
impressed with how they performed.
"It makes a world of difference when
you get out of the classroom into a competition and it gives the
youngsters confidence."
