Event Write Ups - 2006

These write ups show the enormous range of fundraising and raising awareness events that take place in aid of CRY.  They are a great source of ideas, and give a good indication of what various types of event involve.

Charity Rugby match in memory of Kasia Ber - 27th December 2006

Horden Rugby Club played a charity match against Seaton Carew, to raise money for CRY in memory of Kasia Ber.

Boxing Day Dip - 26th December 2006

Friends of Kasia Ber braved the cold waters of the North Sea to raise money for CRY in her memory.

Charity Pram Race - 26th December 2006

The Pramraceteam is an eclectic gathering of manhood, drawn predominantly, but not exclusively, from Chobham Rugby Club members.  This year, the team were raising money for CRY in the annual Boxing Day Pram Race organised by The Surrey Border Lions Club.

Sponsored Christmas fast and supermarket bag-packing - December 2006

Friends and family of Richard Martin, who died of WPW in November 2004, have been fundraising for CRY in Richard's memory.

"The Dreaded Cut" in memory of Mike Scott - November 2006

After growing his dreadlocks for ten years, Danny bravely agreed to have them cut in front of a packed pub crowd!

Charity lingerie fashion show in memory of Martyn Luckett - November 2006

Charlotte Luckett organised a charity lingerie fashion show to raise money and awareness for CRY in memory of her brother Martyn.

Halloween Disco in memory of Kasia Ber - October 2006

Friend's and family of Kasia Ber organised a Halloween Disco to raise money for CRY in her memory.

CRY Patron Simon Halliday joins 'Botham Walk 2006' - October 2006

Ian Botham has been undertaking a series of walks through 17 UK cities in 9 days, to raise money for the Leukaemia Research Fund and the Teenage Cancer Trust.  Ian invited CRY to join him for one of the city-walks, and so Simon Halliday donned a CRY Heart costume and accompanied Ian through Oxford on the 16th of October. 

Great North Run in memory of Kasia Ber - 1st October 2006

Christopher Worrall ran the Great North Run to raise money for CRY, in memory of his friend Kasia Ber.

Great North Run in memory of Laura Fox - 1st October 2006

Mark Fox, Robi Fox, Sam Cliff and Martin Andrews ran the Great North Run to raise money for CRY in memory of Laura Fox.

Great North Run in memory of Jennifer Hawes - 1st October 2006

Sarah Harvey ran the Great North Run 2006 to raise money for CRY in memory of Jennifer Hawes - one of her best friends who died suddenly of heart failure, aged just 23.

Liverpool Corporate Cup charity fun run - 26th September 2006

Sixth Formers, parents and teachers from Abbey Gate College took part in the Liverpool Corporate Cup charity fun run, to raise money for CRY.

Coast2Coast cycle ride in memory of Brice Ginisty - 25th to 28th September

Jules Drakeford and Kev Hines completed a 150-mile bike ride from Whitehaven to Tynemouth, to raise money for CRY in memory of their friend, Brice.  Although the route was arduous at times, they were treated to some spectacular views as they made their way through the Lake District and across the Pennines.

Windsor Half Marathon - 24th September 2006

Tom Graham and his Royal Mail colleagues help to set up and orchestrate the Windsor Half Marathon every year.  For their services this year, they were gifted £1000, which has been passed on to CRY.  The cheque was presented to them by HRH Prince Philip.

Charity Greek Night - 17th September 2006

Fanos and Myroull Hadji-Michael held their annual charity Greek night at the Cypriot Community Centre in Wood Green, with proceeds from the event split between CRY and Cancer Research UK.

Charity gig in memory of Jennifer Finney - 16th September 2006

Chris Bath organised and performed at a charity gig in memory of his girlfriend Jennifer Finney.  Also performing at the gig were Ciaran France, The Model Village and Soft-Use.  The evening was a fantastic success, raising awareness of CRY, and also raising over £1000.

Annual Grand Charity Evening in memory of Levon Morland - 15th September 2006

Once again this event was a major success, with thousands of pounds raised for CRY.  Kevan Jones MP - Chairman of the CRY All Party Parliamentary Group - was also in attendance, to speak about the work of CRY.

Parachute Jump in memory of Andrew Coles

Ann and Elisa Coles both completed Tandem Skydives in memory of Andrew Coles.  Sponsorship money was collected to go to the Andrew Parr Memorial Fund, within CRY.

Captain's Charity Golf Day, Wimbledon Park Golf Club - 9th September 2006

A total of 88 competitors, all wearing distinctive red CRY baseball caps and including local MP Stephen Hammond and Roger Taylor MBE, enjoyed a sunny afternoon’s golf.  A further 30 guests attended a BBQ, raffle draw, auction and “Elvis” concert in the evening.

The Sebastian English Memorial Family Picnic - 9th September 2006

This, the second Sebastian English Memorial Family Picnic, was held at St. Michael's School in Highgate, London.  18 families attended, and enjoyed a barbecue and games for all the children.

Hydro Active Women's Challenge in memory of Adam Donnelly - 3rd September 2006

Julie Donnelly, along with family and friends, ran the Hydro Active Women's Challenge to raise money for CRY in memory of Julie's son Adam.

Charity Football Match in memory of Kevin Sayer - 27th August 2006

Annual event in memory of Kevin Sayer, who died suddenly in his sleep aged 18, and Matt Green, who died from a form of cancer aged 19.  The event was well-attended, and also featured a raffle and buffet.

Great Wilderness Challenge - 18th & 19th August 2006

Ullapool Air Cadets presented a cheque to CRY Representative Alex Fotheringham, after once again completing the Great Wilderness Challenge in the Scottish Highlands.

Parachute jump in memory of Greg Highwood-Mack - 17th August 2006

Friends and family of Greg Highwood-Mack did a parachute jump in his memory - overcoming their own nerves, and unpredictable weather.

'Red CRY at Night' charity gig - 12th August 2006

Charity music event at Woodbridge Community Centre, featuring performances by Ben Scully, Slippery Penguin and Shut Up Shirley.

CRY summer raffle - August 2006

As part of our raising awareness efforts in summer 2006, and to mark England's efforts in the World Cup, CRY held a raffle with a signed England football shirt as the top prize. A list of winners can now be seen on this page.

Team Buzz 'Tour de France' - August 2006

Mark Dee-Shapland and three friends - known as Team Buzz - cycled the length of France to raise money and awareness for CRY, in memory of Mark's sister Claire.  CRY Patron John Inverdale, and Arsenal and England footballer Theo Walcott, both gave their support to this CRY fundraising event. 

Run Preston in memory of Andrew Parr - 9th July 2006

Five employees from Preston Crown Court completed a 5k run through the streets of Preston to raise money and awareness for CRY, in memory of Andrew Parr.

London to Paris Cycle Ride - 21st to 25th June 2006

Matt Chesterman and Adam Roberts cycled from London to Paris to raise money and awareness for CRY, sampling a few French beers along the way!

Parachute Jump in memory of Jane Starr - 8th June 2006

Mike Aylott and Stuart Kitteringham jumped from 12,000 feet to raise money for CRY in memory of Mike's fiancée, Jane Starr.

Jacqui Alexander Tandem Skydive - 28th May 2006

"I held the belief that I couldn't do such a scary thing for the last 20 yrs and then 4 months ago I challenged and changed that limiting belief.  I said goodbye to the fear of flying so high, so freely and without a safety rope attached - and it feels great!"

Cycling to all Barclays Premiership Football grounds - 27th May to 2nd June 2006

David Shore and Karl Rogers cycled to all 20 Barclays Premiership Football grounds to raise money and awareness for CRY.  On route, they battled strong headwinds and rain - and got thoroughly fed up with eating energy bars!

'Nurburg 4 Nowt', Nurburgring Track Day Project - 27th to 29th May 2006

Brothers Richard and Adam Fry took a specially-prepared - and slightly aging - Volkswagen Jetta to a public Track Day at the famous German Nurburgring race circuit.  With the car sporting various CRY stickers and logos, the pair hoped to raise awareness of CRY, in memory of their sister Rhian who died suddenly in 2000, aged 17.

White-water rafting in memory of John Esplin - 27th May 2006

Lesley Fullerton organised a team to face the challenge of white-water rafting in Aberfeldy.  Lesley arranged the event in memory of her partner John Esplin.

6-a-side Football Tournament - 7th May 2006

Leeds Met University students Luke Stocks and Stephen Jackett organised a 6-a-side football tournament to raise awareness and money for CRY.

Charity Walk in memory of Levon Morland - 23rd April 2006

Over 70 people took part in this annual event organised by Sandra Morland in memory of her son Levon, who died in January 2002 from Wolfe Parkinson White Syndrome.

Eildon Hills Challenge - 23rd April 2006

David Gordon completed this sponsored walk to raise money for CRY in memory of his son Ewan.

Peter Snell - London Marathon 2006

Peter Snell chose to run the 2006 London Marathon for CRY following the sudden death of his Uncle.  The gruelling 26.2 mile course was even more of a challenge for Peter, as he broke his ankle a few weeks before the Marathon.  Undeterred by this setback, Peter decided to tackle the event on crutches.

Devizes to Westminster canoe race in memory of Sebastian English - 14th to 17th April 2006

Jon Peatman and Bruce Buckland-Wilson from Lord Wandsworth College battled wind, rain and aggressive swans to complete this 125-mile canoe race.  The pair were raising money and awareness for CRY, in memory of Sebastian English.

Bath Half Marathon in memory of Sebastian English - 19th March 2006

Former Bath and England rugby player, Simon Halliday, organised a team of more than 70 CRY runners to take part in the Bath Half Marathon.  Many former international rugby players joined in the fundraising efforts, including Will Carling, Jason Leonard, Richard Hill, David Egerton, Paul Ackford, Mike Teague, Jonathan Webb, Jonathan Callard - and more. 

Mark Fox's Sahara Desert Trek - 13th to 21st March 2006

CRY Publications Co-ordinator Mark Fox trekked 100km in the Sahara Desert to raise money for CRY in memory of his sister Laura.  Mark battled baking desert days, chilly desert nights, sandstorms and blisters to complete this epic journey.

Han Soo Kwan Taekwondo club, Sponsored Breaking Day - 12th February 2006

The Han Soo Kwan Taekwondo club in Burnley, held a Sponsored Breaking Day to raise money and awareness for CRY.  Over 200 pieces of inch-thick pine wood were broken by the students in the club.  The write up of this event also features video clips of some of the students in action!

Imperial College London support CRY with Arts Fest 2006 - 6th to 10th February 2006

Hanna Barriga, a very talented musician and good friend of the Imperial College Arts Festival committee, lost her sister Cecilia in May 2005 to an unknown heart condition.  The committee agreed with Hanna's suggestion that Arts Fest 2006 should choose CRY as its charity to support.
