Event Write Ups - 2007

These write ups show the enormous range of fundraising and raising awareness events that take place in aid of CRY.  They are a great source of ideas, and give a good indication of what various types of event involve.

Fundraising in memory of Charlie Morettes - throughout 2007

In the six months after Charlie’s death on 16th May 2007 at the age of 8, many fundraising events have taken place and we have managed with the help of friends to raise over £30,000.

Fundraising in memory of Daniel Young - December 2007

I work for Tesco and with the help of my colleagues we set about a fundraising event.  We all wore football shirts and had two days of collecting in store.  The customers and staff and played a big part in this.  Next we held a quiz night and local companies all donated prizes to be raffled, both events were a great success.

QPANI Charity Quiz Night - 29th November 2007

The Quarry Products Association NI (QPANI) was delighted to hand over a cheque for £2826 to Mark Carruthers, Patron of CRY, as a result of its annual Charity Quiz Night.

Breathing Space Charity Walk for CRY - 25th November 2007

Breathing Space Spa & Studio organised an 8-mile sponsored walk to raise money and awareness for CRY in memory of Hannah Turberville.

Sponsored netball match in memory of Sarah Simpson - 28th October 2007

Friends and family of Sarah Simpson took part in a sponsored netball match to raise money for CRY.

Lexus Croydon 10k in memory of Cecilia Barriga - 21st October 2007

Philippa Stanyard and top Scottish cricketer Neil McCallum - who scored 60 against Pakistan in the summer - sportingly donned heart suits to publicise CRY and to help raise funds in memory of Croydon Harrier Cecilia Barriga. 

Cardiff Half Marathon - 14th October 2007

Phil Austin, Chris Lane and Dave Williams ran the Cardiff Half Marathon to raise money for CRY in memory of Keith Newton, Howard English and Sebastian English.

Great North Run - 30th September 2007

Pam Edmunds. Gail Edwards, Tracey Bennett, Sheryl Allman and Raj Sanghera entered the 2007 Great North Run to raise money and awareness for CRY.  With flowers in their hair and wearing Hula skirts, they received lots of encouragement from a fantastic crowd.

Dominican College Annual Sponsored Walk - 28th September 2007

Mr John Lundy, The Divisional Representative for Cardiac Risk in The Young (CRY) in Northern Ireland, was pleased today to accept a cheque for £2000 raised by the pupils and friends of Dominican College as part of the 2007 Annual Sponsored Walk.

Charity Golf Competition in memory of Kasia Ber - 23rd September 2007

The Unipres Golf Society had a charity golf competition at Maften Hall in Northumberland in aid of CRY and for the Kasia Ber Memorial Fund.

London to Paris Cycle Ride in memory of Gregory Highwood-Mack - 12th to 15th September 2007

Chris and Elisabeth Mack joined 101 other cyclists on a 4 day, 450 kilometre cycle ride from London to Paris, taking in magnificent - if somewhat hilly - scenery on route. Chris and Elisabeth entered the event to raise money for CRY in memory of Gregory Highwood-Mack.

Bungee Jump in memory of Paul Leach - 9th September 2007

Emma McGough, Adam Waite and Libby Forrest did a bungee jump off the transporter bridge in Middlesbrough, to raise money for CRY in memory of Paul Leach.

Sponsored "Stop Smoking" in memory of Kasia Ber - September 2007

Denise Gutcher did a sponsored "Stop Smoking" to raise money and awareness for CRY in memory of Kasia Ber.

'Lap the Lough' cycle event in memory of Aaron Lundy - 26th August 2007

Martin and Susan Duffy, Sean McKay, Michael Sayers, and Daniel and Claire Duffy took part in the 'Lap the Lough' cycle event - riding one lap (95 miles) around Lough Neagh.

Sponsored walk in memory of Christopher Dixon - 25th August 2007

Aimee Norman organised a sponsored walk to raise money and awareness for CRY, in memory of her boyfriend Christopher Dixon.

Steak barbecue fundraiser - 17th August 2007

This fundraising evening featured a steak barbecue, raffle, 3 Dutch auctions and live music.  The event was to raise money for the CRY Northern Ireland fund in memory of Richard Martin.

Peru Trek in memory of Brian Lennon - August 2007

Lynn Foster undertook the challenging Peru Trek to raise money for CRY and the Irish Heart Foundation in memory of her boyfriend Brian Lennon.

Annual Motor Cycle Trials School - August 2007

The Luckett family ran their annual motor cycle trials school, with 65 riders taking part in the training.  This was the 16th time the family have run the event, and for the third year the event was held in memory of Martyn Luckett.

Kent Ravens RLFC donates money to CRY - August 2007

Vicki Bacon and the Donnelly family represented the Kent Ravens Rugby League Football Club as a cheque was presented to CRY at the team's Princes Park Stadium.  CRY supporters Phil and Robert Eastty kindly attended to collect the cheque.

Charity golf tournaments in memory of Ben Simpson - August 2007

Every year the Ben Simpson Golf Society holds two charity golf tournaments to raise money for CRY in memory of Ben Simpson.  Ben died suddenly of an undiagnosed heart condition in October 2005, aged 26.

Fundraising in memory of Peter Reynolds - August 2007

Lyn Hacker, Bev Pearce, Margaret Thomas, and colleagues from Marks & Spencers in Cribbs Causeway have undertaken a variety of fundraising schemes to raise money for CRY.

'Flight For Hearts' Departure - 30th July 2007

Consultant Cardiologist Nigel Wheeldon began the first leg of his epic round the world flight, departing from Robin Hood Airport, Doncaster, on 30th July 2007.

3-day Trek in the Alps - 15th to 17th July

John Hewett, Brian Wreford, Jonathan Garner and John Murgatroyd undertook a 3-day trek in the French Alps to raise money for CRY in memory of John Hewett's son Simon.

CRY Heart of London Bridges Walk - 15th July 2007

Lewis Scott, aged 9 - son of CRY Patron Andy Scott - gives his account of the CRY Heart of London Bridges Walk, which he completed along with his family.

CRY Heart of London Bridges Walk in memory of Martyn Luckett - 15th July 2007

Brenda Luckett was joined by several members of the Luckett family (and extended family) on the CRY Heart of London Bridges Walk, to raise money and awareness in memory of Brenda's son Martyn.

Great Capital Run - 15th July 2007

Matt Spain entered this running event in a CRY Heart Costume, to raise money for CRY in memory of his friend Greg.

Three Peaks Challenge in memory of Kasia Ber - 14th to 15th July 2007

Dave Foster, Paul Lutz, Martin Alexander and Alan Summerson undertook the Three Peaks Challenge to raise money for CRY in memory of Kasia Ber.  Kasia's father John is a friend and colleague of the four intrepid fundraisers.

'Run Preston' in memory of Andrew Parr - 8th July 2007

Ray Warbrick, Rick Dolby and Steve Rybowski took part in the 'Run Preston' event to raise money for CRY in memory of Andrew Parr.

CRY Heart of London Bridges Walk - 7th and 15th July 2007

On July 15th, CRY Patron Kathryn Harries was joined by over 400 CRY supporters on a sponsored walk crossing 8 bridges from Westminster to Tower Bridge.  The 8 bridges each signified one of the 8 apparently 'fit and healthy' young people who die every week in the UK from undiagnosed heart conditions. 

Charity concert in memory of Cecilia Barriga - 7th July 2007

Seven young musicians organised and performed a charity concert in St. Edmunds Church, Beckenham.  The event was to raise funds and awareness for CRY, in memory of Cecilia Barriga.

Charity Night in memory of Ryan John Darby - 30th June 2007

This fundraising event featured a disco, buffet, and a raffle with numerous fantastic prizes.  CRY Representative Rob Thorne also spoke about CRY's campaign, and particularly its screening program.  The event was raising money and awareness for CRY in memory of Ryan John Darby, who died suddenly in 2006 aged 27.

Team "Gin'll Fix It" Calais to Casablanca car rally - 24th to 28th June 2007

Ben Fisher, Chris Lingwood and Paul Arthur drove an aging BMW 7 Series from Calais to Casablanca (and back!) to raise money and awareness for CRY in memory of their friend Vicky Stockton.

Three Peaks Challenge in memory of Howard and Sebastian English - 17th to 18th June 2007

Five teams successfully completed the gruelling Three Peaks Challenge and raised over £100,000 for CRY in memory of Howard and Sebastian English.

Three Peaks Challenge in memory of Kim Wheating - 8th June 2007

Philippa Railing and a team of girls undertook the Three Peaks Challenge to raise money for CRY in memory of Philippa's friend, Kim Wheating.

Fernhurst frazzles to Blackdown magic - 8th June 2007

When Blackdown announced that they would play the King's Arms at Fernhurst, it raised the question could the boys rock such a major venue and keep the crowd buzzing for a show running more than 2 hours?

'Mission Implausible' in memory of Anthony Child - 2nd to 15th June 2007

Chris Gordon rode a Honda Cub90 around the entire coast of the UK, to raise money and awareness for CRY in memory of his friend Anthony Child.  Chris endured all manner of bad weather and riding discomfort on his 3301-mile journey, but also received lots of welcome encouragement from friends and well wishers.

eBay auction - passenger ride in a Mitsubishi World Rally Car - June 2007

CRY supporter Simon Willis works for the Mitsubishi World Rally Team, and he arranged for the team to offer one lucky person the ride of a lifetime in a Mitsubishi World Rally Car at the 2007 Goodwood Festival of Speed. 

Charity Basketball Match - 18th May 2007

This annual game between Lisburn Basketball Club and Bangor Basketball Club is played in memory of Nicholas Collins.

Charity Rugby Match and Family Fun Day - 12th May 2007

The 3rd Annual Family Fun Day in memory of Stevie Wiggins was held at Preston Grasshoppers RFC on Saturday 12th of May.  The day featured a charity rugby match, followed by a hog roast, bouncy castle and other attractions.

Belfast City Marathon - 7th May 2007

Two relay teams from the Irish Football Association ran in the Belfast City Marathon to raise money and awareness for CRY.

West Highland Way in memory of Kevin Stentaford - 22nd to 27th April 2007

Roy and Carol Stentaford were joined by 5 friends in tackling the West Highland Way in Scotland.  The walk was to raise money and awareness for CRY in memory of Roy and Carol's son Kevin, who died suddenly whilst playing football in 2001, aged just 20

Simon Edgar's London Marathon - 22nd April 2007

Mary-Lou Gravestock's London Marathon - 22nd April 2007

It was so special to run through London and end up finishing on The Mall.  The weather was a nightmare for running - so very hot - but on the plus side it brought the crowds out who were unbelievable and very supportive.  There were bands playing all along the route, children handing out sweets, people shouting encouragement and generally a real carnival atmosphere - London at its best.

Tom Hicks' London Marathon - 22nd April 2007

At the start, I teamed up with another CRY runner (not in costume) who took me off at some pace through the rowdy pubs of the East End, where middle-aged Elvis impersonators crooned from balconies and odd men serenaded with bugles from their back-alley doorways.

Alison Pearson's London Marathon - 22nd April 2007

I chose CRY as my charity as my friend Leah’s nephew had died aged two, so CRY became personal. It was nice to see other CRY runners along the way and we all gave each other words of encouragement.

Andy Varley's London Marathon - 22nd April 2007

I was running for CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young) having decided to take part after watching the 2006 race and discussing with some friends. I also wanted to raise some money for a worthwhile cause and complete a challenge of a lifetime.

Charity football match in memory of Graeme Blenkinsop - 15th April 2007

GKN Westlands FC played an entertaining charity football match against friends of Graeme Blenkinsop, to raise money and awareness for CRY and the St Mary's Hospital Breast Care Trust Fund.

The Big Heart Bike Ride - 14th to 23rd April 2007

The Big Heart Bike Ride was a 10-day adventure in Cuba.  The trip featured 5 days of cycling (320km) around the island, plus plenty of sightseeing in Havana.  The ride took in quiet roads, passing towns and villages that seemed frozen in time. Highlights of the ride included the Bay of Pigs -  famous for US aggression on Cuba in 1961; and Santa Clara with its statue of the legendary Che Guevara.

Charity parachute jump in memory of Matthew Wilkin - 14th April 2007

We decided to do a parachute jump for CRY in memory of my best friend's brother, Matt, who sadly died of SADS.  Having heard about CRY we (me, my dad Peter, and sister Alice) thought this would be the perfect choice as a charity for us to skydive for.

Charity Bungee Day in memory of Alex Roberts - 7th April 2007

The Brook Pub in Cambridge held a charity Bungee day to raise money for CRY in memory of Alex Roberts.  The day also featured a BBQ, raffle and evening disco.

Sponsored cycle ride in memory of James Kelly - April 2007

John Bonner, Billy McDonald and Con Bonner completed a 230 mile cycle ride on the west coast of Ireland, to raise money for CRY in memory of James Kelly.

'The People's Race' charity horserace - April 2007

CRY supporter Janine Patchcott has been raising awareness of CRY in her bid to take part in a charity amateur horserace - 'The People's Race' - at Aintree on the same weekend as the world famous Grand National.  Janine was one of 3500 people who applied through the Daily Mirror for a chance to take part in the world's most famous horseracing meeting, in a competition sponsored by John Smiths. These applications were whittled down to a shortlist of 30 people, who were then assessed on their fitness and riding skills.

Charity Rugby match in memory of Sebastian English - 25th March 2007

Sunday 25th March saw the 3rd Annual Sebastian English Memorial Match played at Haslemere Rugby Club.  Sebastian was a young man who tragically died from an undiagnosed heart condition whilst playing rugby for Haslemere in 2004. This yearly tribute day continues to raise awareness and much-needed funds for the charity Cardiac Risk in the Young.

"Crewe's Missiles" Mini Club Charity Run - 25th March 2007

The Mini owner's club "Crewe's Missiles" undertook a charity run to raise money for CRY.

Wolves Youth Bank Showcase - March 2007

Ashley Cox, Adele Cox, Aaron Cox, Nathan Robinson, Elle Robinson, Larni Robinson, Danielle Robinson, Stacey-Dawn Round and Sian Morgan took part in the Wolves Youth Bank Showcase to raise awareness of CRY in memory of Donna Marie Cox.

Sportsman's Dinner & Bath Half Marathon - March 2007

After his fantastic fundraising and awareness raising efforts for CRY at the Bath Half Marathon 2006, CRY Patron and former England Rugby International, Simon Halliday, was once again at the forefront of two major CRY fundraising events in March 2007 - a Sportsman's Dinner at the Marriott Hotel in London, and the Bath Half Marathon 2007.

Charity Gig - Rosemary's Baby - 10th February 2007

Over 200 people turned up at Littleton School where we had lights, staging, loud music and over 5 bands performing throughout the night.

Sponsored Swim in memory of Kasia Ber - 14th January 2007

I went through three and a half weeks of hard gym swimming training, which was extremely tiring but it was worth it. I dare say I lost 3 stone in a day, hardly surprising after what I ate over Christmas!
