Event Write Ups - 2009

These write ups show the enormous range of fundraising and raising awareness events that take place in aid of CRY.  They are a great source of ideas, and give a good indication of what various types of event involve.

Afghanistan half marathon in memory of Lt Charlotte Pistra - 25th December 2009
Sgt D L Tuck organised a half marathon in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, to raise money for CRY and Help for Heroes in memory of Lt Charlotte Pistra.  Lt Pistra died suddenly of an undetected heart defect in December 2008.

Charity gig in memory of Liam Morefield - 19th November 2009
Sophie Sandles organised a charity gig at The Frog and Fiddle (Cheltenham) to raise money and awareness for CRY in memory of Liam Morefield.

500km Yucatan Peninsula (Mexico) cycling challenge - November 2009
Alistair Macfarlane braved extreme heat and humidity in tackling a gruelling 500km sponsored cycle ride across the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico.  Alistair decided to raise funds for CRY in memory of his best mate Matthew Cooper, who died suddenly in 2003 aged 22.

Raising awareness in Churchill Square shopping centre, Brighton - October 2009
In support of CRY Raising Awareness Week 2009, Joseph Tanner held a CRY information stand in a local shopping centre.

Marathon Walk - 24th October 2009
CRY representative Martin “The Hips” Appleby and his friend Billy “The KitKat Kid”, walked a marathon on Saturday 24th October 2009 to raise awareness and funds for Cardiac Risk in the Young.

Royal Parks Half Marathon - 11th October 2009
Over 20 CRY runners took part in the second-ever Royal Parks Foundation Half Marathon.  The 13.1 mile course took in Hyde Park, St. James’s Park, Kensington Gardens and Green Park; as well as numerous historic London landmarks.

Boat party in memory of Andrew Emery - 10th October 2009
Lisa Jenkins organised a boat party on the River Thames to raise funds and awareness for CRY in memory of her friend Andrew Emery.

Brompton World Championships - 4th October 2009
Richard Hinkley entered a bicycle race with a difference, to raise money for CRY in memory of his sister-in-law, Jane Allen.

Bath Canal 5k in memory of Richard Wiggin - 3rd October 2009
Sarah Buckley and friends completed a 5k run through the city of Bath, to raise money and awareness for CRY in memory of Sarah's brother, Richard Wiggin.

"Jeans for Genes day" in memory of Ronnie Armitage - 2nd October 2009
Sue Armitage organised a "Jeans for Genes day" to raise money for CRY in memory of her son Ronnie.

"Run to the Beat" Half Marathon - 27th September 2009
Dawn McMorrow and James Lewis entered the 'Run to the Beat' half marathon to raise funds for CRY in memory of James' cousin, Simon Hewett.

Fundraising Quiz in memory of Simon McNamara - 25th September 2009
Sue Wheeldon organised a Fundraising Quiz for staff at NHS Nottinghamshire County, to raise funds and awareness for CRY in memory of Simon McNamara.

Great North Run - 20th September 2009
80 CRY runners entered the 2009 Great North Run and all performed admirably on an unseasonably warm September day!

3 Peaks Challenge in memory of Simon McNamara - 18th & 19th September 2009
Friends and family of Simon McNamara tackled the gruelling 3 Peaks Challenge to raise money for CRY in memory of Simon.

Charity Skins Game in memory of Aaron Lundy - 18th September 2009
Charity golf event at Portstewart Golf Club, featuring Ryder Cup star Graeme McDowell, Irish PGA professional David Jones, Irish International and East of Ireland champion Paul Cutler and accomplished amateur Stuart Kyle.  The day also featured an auction and dinner.

London Duathlon in memory of Amanda McCarthy - 13th September 2009
Pete McCarthy and Dave Bentley entered the challenging London Duathlon in the pleasant surroundings of Richmond Park, to raise money for CRY in memory of Pete's daughter, Amanda.

Coffee morning in memory of Kasia Ber - 11th September 2009
Diane Ber organised a coffee morning to raise money and awareness for CRY in memory of her daughter Kasia.

Quiz night in memory of Simon McNamara - 5th September 2009
A quiz and supper night was held in Rolleston Village Hall on Saturday 5th September to raise funds for, and awareness of Cardiac Risk in the Young - CRY.

WGC Ladies Youth FC; raising awareness in memory of Mathew Blease - September 2009
Karen Blease runs WGC Ladies Youth FC and for the 2009/10 season the team's shirts feature the CRY logo, to help raise awareness in memory of Karen's son (and team coach) Mathew, who died in 2008 aged just 13.

"GUYfest" in memory of Guy Evans - 22nd August 2009
A fundraising and awareness-raising event in memory of Guy Evans.

Kayak around the Isle of Wight - 11th August 2009
Nick Tissot and Ed Coley decided to try and kayak around the Isle of Wight in under 24 hours, to raise funds and awareness for CRY.

Charity golf day in memory of Ben Simpson - 8th August 2009
This charity golf day was held at Farleigh Court, Surrey on Saturday 8th August and featured 28 golfers playing for the Ben Simpson Claret Jug.

CRY Heart of London Bridges Walk - 26th July 2009
Over 600 CRY supporters (and dogs!) from around the country joined CRY patron Kathryn Harries for the 3rd annual CRY Heart of London Bridges Walk.

Book Sale in memory of Tom Clabburn - 24th July 2009
Tom Clabburn's mum, Claire Prosser, held her second book sale this year to raise money for the Tom Clabburn Memorial Fund within CRY.

Hawaiian garden party in memory of Kasia Ber - 4th July 2009
Friends and family of Kasia Ber attended a themed garden party and enjoyed lovely weather as they raised money and awareness for CRY, in memory of Kasia.

City of London Police Awards and Charity Gala - 20th June 2009
CRY was chosen as the charity for the 2009 City of London Police Awards and Charity Gala, thanks to the involvement of CRY supporter Detective Inspector Steve Jackson.  This annual dinner dance is expected to have raised several thousand pounds for CRY.

Charity Musical Evening - 13th June 2009
CRY supporters Christine Abram and Ruth Lowe organised a charity musical evening at Preston Minster.  The event was in aid of three charities - CRY, EDN (Eating Disorder Network) and Disabled Cricket.  There was also a raffle, auction and refreshments including homemade cakes.

West Highland Way walk in memory of Robert O'Kane - 8th to 14th June 2009
Friends and family of Robert O'Kane completed the 98 mile West Highland Way walk to raise money and awareness for CRY in Robert's memory.

Charity night in memory of John Marshall - 6th June 2009
Hayley Marshall organised an evening of music, comedy and top-notch raffle prizes to raise money for CRY in memory of her brother John.

Book and cake sale in memory of Tom Clabburn - 16th May 2009
Friends and family of Tom Clabburn raised over a thousand pounds for the Tom Clabburn Memorial Fund within CRY, by holding a book and cake sale in Tom's memory.

Raffle and auction in memory of John Marshall - 9th May 2009
Hayley Marshall organised a raffle and auction at a golf weekend, to raise money for CRY in memory of her brother John.

'Coast to Coast' sponsored bike ride in memory of Kasia Ber - 2nd May 2009
Jeff Kinkade and friends rode from Cumbria to Tynemouth to raise money and awareness for CRY, in memory of Kasia Ber.

Three Peaks Challenge and Pigeon Racing Night in memory of Harvey Hague-Armitage - May 2009
Two very different fundraising events were held in May 2009 to raise funds for the Harvey-Hague Armitage Memorial Fund within CRY.  Firstly, a team of climbers successfully completed the Three Peaks Challenge; and secondly, a Pigeon Racing Night was held.

Sarah Butterworth, London Marathon - 26th April 2009
Just wanted to say a big thank you to everyone at CRY and the army of volunteers for all your help, especially after the race.  I can’t think of any other occasion where I’d dream of letting people run around fetching me cups of tea or allowing a child half my size to carry my bags - but after running a marathon these things are so much appreciated. 

Penny Simpson, London Marathon - 26th April 2009
The Rhinos, Elvis, three legged runners, giant pig, runners dressed up as anything and everything all made their entrance to the cheers of the other runners. And then there was the rest of us, names and photos of our loved ones printed on T-shirts, so many sad stories, what a mix of emotions.

Alison Pearson and Leonie Madigan, London Marathon - 26th April 2009
The first 13 miles passed in a flash. We overtook Katie Price and Peter Andre at 11 miles and despite my best efforts, they didn’t seem keen on running with us for some reason!

Simon Halliday, London Marathon - 26th April 2009
I got away at 9.45am sharp courtesy of the Mayor of Maze Hill (the little East London suburb where we were situated), alongside a 20 year old marine called Ben who had lost an arm and a leg in Afghanistan and had been running with a prosthetic leg  on a ‘blade’ for only a few weeks

Run Armagh 10k Challenge - 19th April 2009
500 competitors entered the inaugural Run Armagh 10k Challenge, in perfect weather conditions.  All proceeds from the event are being donated to CRY.

Classical recital in memory of Alex Buckler - 16th April 2009
Edward Marsh, baritone, accompanied by Peter Ford on piano, performed an evening of songs during a Charity Recital held in memory of Alex Buckler.

Luke Dickinson Charity Three Legged Pub Stagger - 4th April 2009
Family and friends of Luke Dickinson took part in a three legged stagger around local pubs, to raise money and awareness for CRY in memory of Luke.

Cake sale in memory of Tom Clabburn - 2nd April 2009
Year 9 and Year 10 students at Drayton Manor organised a cake sale to raise money for CRY in memory of Tom Clabburn.

Travel company Explore UK have made a £400 donation in memory of Tom Clabburn.

Concert in memory of Fabian Maingot - 11th March 2009
Cardinal Vaughan Memorial School's Big Band played a concert at St. John's Church, Westminster, in memory of former pupil Fabian Maingot, who died suddenly of a heart problem in 1999.  The event raised money for Cardiac Risk in the Young and the British Heart Foundation.

C-Fest: An evening of music to raise funds for CRY in memory of Harvey Hague-Armitage - March 2009
Students from Cardinal Griffin Catholic High School organised and performed an evening of contemporary rock and metal music to raise funds for CRY in memory of fellow student Harvey Hague-Armitage.  The event consisted of a mixture of solo performances and performances by groups.

St Jean Pied de Port to Cap Finisterre walk - February / March 2009
Mark Luscombe-Whyte undertook an
800km walk from St Jean Pied de Port in France to Santiago de Compostela in Spain, to raise money for CRY.

Charity Night in memory of Paul Wilkins - 10th January 2009
Friends and family of Paul Wilkins attended a charity night in his memory.  The evening featured food, music and an auction with some great items up for grabs.  There was also a special guest appearance from 'Wilko' the trainee Police sniffer dog.

ownafilmcompany.com Launch Party - 8th January 2009
The launch party for the ownafilmcompany.com website was held at London's Oxygen bar on January 8th.  The evening featured an auction of movie memorabilia and a business card raffle, with proceeds donated to CRY. CRY information was also on display at the event.

Charity clay target shoot - 3rd January 2009

Around 75 competitors took part in a charity clay target shoot to raise money and awareness for CRY in memory of Amanda McCarthy.  The day also featured a raffle and refreshments.

Fundraising in memory of Tom Clabburn - January 2009

BBC TV news director Gordon Findlay raised funds at his place of work by making a "life and times" DVD about a retiring colleague, and selling copies for £5 each.
