Event Write Ups - Cycling Events

These write ups show the enormous range of fundraising and raising awareness events that take place in aid of CRY.  They are a great source of ideas, and give a good indication of what various types of event involve.

London to Paris Cycle Ride in memory of Nolan Foley - 14th September 2011
David Foley cycled from London to Paris between Wednesday 14th and Saturday 17th September 2011 in memory of his son Nolan Foley and he has so far raised £3,745.00.

 

London to Brighton Cycle in memory of Ethan Jones - 11th September 2011
Jemma Anthony rode in the London to Brighton Cycle ride on Sunday 11th September along with her dad brother and uncle in memory of her cousin Ethan Jones.

 

Bucket & Spade Cycle Ride in memory of Andrew Parr - 27th August 2011
Mike Faun, the minister of Liberty Christian Centre in Horwich, Lancashire, completed a 38 mile cycle ride from Southport to Blackpool on Saturday 27th August. 
He raised £425 for CRY and the ride was in memory of Andrew Parr.
 

Aberdeen to Leek Charity Cycle in memory of Chris Parr - July 2011

Andrew Russell, Grant Jamieson, Rene Van Oorschot, David Goodwin, Graham Oliver, Thomas Lydiate, Ricky Mclarnon, Ken Rae and Andrew Wallace set out on a challenge to cycle from Aberdeen to Leek, in memory of their friend Chris Parr.

John O'Groats to Glyn School in memory of Tony Cooper - 16th July 2011
On the 16th July, 12 Glyn School students travelled up to the top of Great Britain to begin their 710mile bike ride south to finish at Glyn School on the 23rd.  Stefan Richards and Ziya Gokman represented C.R.Y. in memory of their teacher Tony Cooper, who died in school from a heart attack two years ago.

"Ups and Downs" charity cycle in memory of David Green - 10th July 2011
On Sunday 10th July, Steven Ranson and a team of cyclists took part in the "Ups and Downs" charity 30 mile cycle ride in Petersfield, Hampshire.

Big Heart Bike Ride 2011 - Tanzania - 18th to 26th June 2011

Congratulations and thank you to the fundraisers who took part in the Big Heart Bike Ride this year in Africa. It was a 400 kilometre bike ride through Tanzania to raise money for four heart charities, including CRY. We would like to extend our congratulations to the couple that got engaged while on the trip and wish Ramon and Kath all the best for a very happy future together!

Coast to Coast Cycle in Memory of Jake Carney - 6th June 2011
On Monday 6th June 2011 Dave and Peter Carney took part in a Coast to Coast cycle in memory of Dave's son Jake (see picture below). They raised a wonderful £3,633.50 from the ride.

Andy Smith completes the Andes to Amazon Cycle - 19th May 2011
Andy Smith completed his 5 day cycle in Peru riding from the Sacred Valley to deep into the jungle and has raised £3,355.77 for Cardiac Risk in the Young.  After taking into account the event costs, this means that Andy raised £1,713.77 for the charity.

Zurich Team take on Rutland Water Challenge in memory of Lewis Barry - 16th May 2011

On Monday 16 May, 50 intrepid Risk Engineers and Zurich M Sales staff from all over the UK took on the challenge of Rutland Water in memory of Lewis Barry and to raise funds for CRY - and won! The cyclists circumnavigated the 17 miles around the reservoir - some chose to add the 6 mile island for good measure.  Walkers and runners took on the 10k route across the dam and back.

Vietnam Cycle Ride - 30th October to 11th November 2010
Claire Wilson was one of three CRY riders who undertook the Vietnam Cycle Ride challenge.

"Rockett Rides"; cycling Land's End to John O'Groats, and back! - 21st to 27th August 2010
Ben Rockett attempted a new world record for cycling from Land's End to John O'Groats and back, whilst also raising funds and awareness for CRY.

Battle to Lille bike ride in memory of James Haggerty - 19th to 22nd August 2010
27 novice cyclists -
including James' Dad, teachers and sub-contractors of Battle Abbey School - undertook a 149-mile bike ride to raise money and awareness for CRY in memory of James Haggerty.

London Triathlon - 8th August 2010
Pete McCarthy and Dave Bentley entered the 2010 London Triathlon to raise money and awareness for CRY, in memory of Pete's daughter Amanda.

London to Paris Cycle Ride - 9th to 12th July 2010
Jake Presley, Freddie Fitz-Gibbon, Hugo Gateley, Fred Evans, Louis Timpany and Andy Wilson embarked on a charity bike ride from London to Paris to raise funds for CRY.  This is a personal charity to Jake as his Grandfather was the first ever Chairman of CRY.

Pyrenean Cycle Challenge to raise money and awareness for CRY in memory of Richard Tomkins

"Blazin' Saddles" Land's End to John O'Groats bike ride - 29th May to 4th June 2010
David McGurk and Paul Winspear raised money and awareness for CRY as part of a 6-man team attempting to cycle from Land's End to John O'Groats in just 7 days.

London to Paris Cycle Ride - 12th to 15th May 2010
Guy Allen tackled the 550km cycle ride from London to Paris to raise money and awareness for CRY - encountering some chilly weather and a surprising lack of cafes!

500km Yucatan Peninsula (Mexico) cycling challenge - November 2009
Alistair Macfarlane braved extreme heat and humidity in tackling a gruelling 500km sponsored cycle ride across the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico.  Alistair decided to raise funds for CRY in memory of his best mate Matthew Cooper, who died suddenly in 2003 aged 22.

Brompton World Championships - 4th October 2009
Richard Hinkley entered a bicycle race with a difference, to raise money for CRY in memory of his sister-in-law, Jane Allen.

London Duathlon in memory of Amanda McCarthy - 13th September 2009
Pete McCarthy and Dave Bentley entered the challenging London Duathlon in the pleasant surroundings of Richmond Park, to raise money for CRY in memory of Pete's daughter, Amanda.

'Coast to Coast' sponsored bike ride in memory of Kasia Ber - 2nd May 2009
Jeff Kinkade and friends rode from Cumbria to Tynemouth to raise money and awareness for CRY, in memory of Kasia Ber.

Big Heart Bike Ride in India - 15th to 25th November 2008

CRY was one of three heart charities to benefit from this fundraising cycling event in India.

London to Paris Bike Ride - 10th to 14th September 2008

Kate Piddington and Anna Morecombe tackled the London to Paris Bike Ride to raise money for CRY in memory of Kate's boyfriend Oliver Griffin who died suddenly in February 2008.

London to Paris Bike Ride - 2nd to 5th July 2008

Shona Oxley completed this 285-mile cycling challenge to raise money and awareness for CRY.  Despite suffering punctures and enduring hills, Shona enjoyed stunning scenery on the route and met lots of interesting fellow cyclists.

Lands End to John O'Groats Cycle Ride - 14th to 26th June 2008

Mike Aylott and Adam Austin cycled 934 miles from Lands End to John O'Groats, to raise money and awareness for CRY, in memory of Mike's fiancee (and Adam's friend), Jane Starr.  Jane died suddenly in May 2006 of an undiagnosed heart condition - later identified as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy - aged just 33.

Race Across America - The World's Toughest Bicycle Race - 11th to 18th June 2008

The CRY Team of Richard Ball, Clive Middleton, Greg Whyte and Mat Wilson have successfully completed the daunting 3000-mile Race Across America (RAAM) cycle race and achieved their goal of a top 3 finish!

London to Paris Cycle Ride in memory of Gregory Highwood-Mack - 12th to 15th September 2007

Chris and Elisabeth Mack joined 101 other cyclists on a 4 day, 450 kilometre cycle ride from London to Paris, taking in magnificent - if somewhat hilly - scenery on route. Chris and Elisabeth entered the event to raise money for CRY in memory of Gregory Highwood-Mack.

'Lap the Lough' cycle event in memory of Aaron Lundy - 26th August 2007

Martin and Susan Duffy, Sean McKay, Michael Sayers, and Daniel and Claire Duffy took part in the 'Lap the Lough' cycle event - riding one lap (95 miles) around Lough Neagh.

The Big Heart Bike Ride - 14th to 23rd April 2007

The Big Heart Bike Ride was a 10-day adventure in Cuba.  The trip featured 5 days of cycling (320km) around the island, plus plenty of sightseeing in Havana.  The ride took in quiet roads, passing towns and villages that seemed frozen in time. Highlights of the ride included the Bay of Pigs -  famous for US aggression on Cuba in 1961; and Santa Clara with its statue of the legendary Che Guevara.

Sponsored cycle ride in memory of James Kelly - April 2007

John Bonner, Billy McDonald and Con Bonner completed a 230 mile cycle ride on the west coast of Ireland, to raise money for CRY in memory of James Kelly.

Coast2Coast cycle ride in memory of Brice Ginisty - 25th to 28th September 2006

Jules Drakeford and Kev Hines completed a 150-mile bike ride from Whitehaven to Tynemouth, to raise money for CRY in memory of their friend, Brice.  Although the route was arduous at times, they were treated to some spectacular views as they made their way through the Lake District and across the Pennines.

Team Buzz 'Tour de France' - August 2006

Mark Dee-Shapland and three friends - known as Team Buzz - cycled the length of France to raise money and awareness for CRY, in memory of Mark's sister Claire.  CRY Patron John Inverdale, and Arsenal and England footballer Theo Walcott, both gave their support to this CRY fundraising event. 

London to Paris Cycle Ride - 21st to 25th June 2006

Matt Chesterman and Adam Roberts cycled from London to Paris to raise money and awareness for CRY, sampling a few French beers along the way!

Cycling to all Barclays Premiership Football grounds - 27th May to 2nd June 2006

David Shore and Karl Rogers cycled to all 20 Barclays Premiership Football grounds to raise money and awareness for CRY.  On route, they battled strong headwinds and rain - and got thoroughly fed up with eating energy bars!

Team Ash Coast-2-Coast Cycle Ride - 8th to 10th July 2005

As part of their continuing fundraising efforts in memory of Ashley Livesey, Team Ash took part in a three day cycling event from Whitehaven to Sunderland.

London to Brighton bike ride - 19th June 2005

Doug Cox rode the London to Brighton bike ride in memory of his son Simon.  Doug raised money for CRY through sponsorship, and raised awareness of CRY by distributing leaflets en route.

Sponsored bike ride in memory of Adam Donnelly - 28th May 2005

A team of riders took part in a 75 mile sponsored bike ride in memory of Adam Donnelly.  The team's efforts raised more than £2000 for CRY.

SRC Ben Thorn Cycleothon - 12th September 2004

The bi-annual charity bike ride in memory of Ben Thorn.  A gentle morning cycle ride was followed by a barbecue and party carrying on into the evening

Mountain Mayhem 24 hour mountain bike race
Rod Mason spent a very muddy 24 hours on his bike, to raise money for CRY.

The First 250 mile CRY Cycle and 'Barking Billy and the Scrapyard Dogs
Brendan, Levon’s older brother, and some of his friends, are cycled 250 miles around the counties of Durham and Northumberland, following the shape of a heart. Barking Billy and the Scrapyard Dogs (a band fronted by Levon’s dad) kicked off proceedings at O’Neill’s Irish Bar.
